Engineering Assistant Program (EACDP):
Various Locations (Austin District)
This position performs engineering work and involves job rotation, training and continuing education in design, construction, construction inspection, maintenance, surveying, environmental and transportation operations‑related activities with the intent to actively pursue engineering licensing/registration through appropriate training and exams. Design activity is supervised by a licensed professional engineer who has authority for final approval of all projects. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments;
however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. This role requires contact with local governmental representatives, engineering contractors and private entities.
NOTE:
All employees classified as Engineering Assistants are required to participate in the Engineering Assistant Career Development program. Participation requires a signed Program Agreement outlining responsibilities and service time commitment.
- Actively prepare for professional engineering licensing/registration through appropriate training and exams and completion/maintenance of required documentation.
- Apply engineering principles, methods, and techniques to a wide variety of transportation‑related activities.
- Assist during emergencies and inclement weather.
- Assist in survey activities.
- Collect engineering data at project sites.
- Create detailed PS&E.
- Participate in Career Development, which includes job rotation, training, and continuing education.
- Perform engineering‑related calculations and drafting/design work.
- Perform engineering‑related duties in the field of transportation engineering.
- Prepare and check plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E) and designs.
- Prepare drawings and exhibits to support public involvement.
- Review construction plans prepared by consultants.
- Use automated roadway/structural/hydraulic design programs and computer‑assisted design/engineering systems.
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
- Drive a state vehicle.
- Perform advanced and specialized engineering design work.
- Assist in training less experienced engineering assistants, specialists, or technicians.
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
- Train less experienced engineering assistants, specialists, and technicians.
- Serve as a lead worker and perform related tasks.
- Perform engineering‑related planning, design, data collection, evaluation, and analysis activities.
- Review, design, and detail bridge and structural elements.
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science or higher degree accepted by TX PELS. If you graduate between May‑August 2026 with a Bachelor’s Degree, you may apply; proof of the degree must be provided no later than the start date.
Acceptable Substitutions for All Levels- Master's degree in engineering or a Master of Engineering degree from an institution offering a Bachelor of Science degree in the same discipline, accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET).
- Doctoral degree in engineering or a Doctor of Engineering degree from an accredited institution in the same discipline, accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET).
- Engineering Assistant I:
No work experience required; no supervisory experience required. - Engineering Assistant II: 1 year of engineering‑related experience (full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent); no supervisory experience required.
- Engineering Assistant III: 2 years of engineering‑related experience; passing the Professional Engineer (PE) exam prior to obtaining requisite experience may substitute for two years of experience.
- Mandatory:
