Engine Captains are members of the Wildland fire crew. The Engine Captains will engage in wildfire suppression and wildland fire related activities including prevention, patrol, training, and prescribed burning. The Engine Captains will assist the Wildland Crew Lead and Wildland Fuels Technician in supervision of their specific engine module. The Engine Captains will be assigned to a Type 3 or Type 6 Wildland Engine and will provide leadership and supervision of that module.
The Engine Captains are expected to continue to develop their leadership and wildland firefighting skills through provided training and work experience. When not engaged in fire readiness and suppression duties, crew members will complete hazardous fuels mitigation projects.
This is an hourly position with paid overtime. Paid travel and lodging while working away from Bismarck. Paid physical training time (on-site gym) when working in Bismarck. Crew members will have opportunities to advance NWCG qualifications and attend NWCG sponsored trainings.
Duties:
- Maintain assigned fire equipment including wildland engines for immediate dispatch
- Provide supervision of crew members within Engine module.
- Respond to fire emergencies as requested.
- Direct others in operation and use of firefighting equipment and provide on the job instruction to crew members.
- Assist in the planning and scheduling work assignments as well as supervise, train and evaluate subordinate crew members.
- Assist fire management staff to meet desired hazardous fuels reduction prescriptions on private and NDFS land.
- Clearly communicate instructions, directions, and information to staff, and subordinates.
- Operate/maintain motor vehicles including cars, trucks, UTVs and fire engines in a safe manner.
- Operate/maintain power tools, hand tools, and equipment such as chainsaws.
- Instruct and train crew members in basic fire behavior and inform supervisors of minor tactical changes.
- Ensure work areas, vehicles and equipment are clean and maintained.
- Communicate instructions and concerns within the chain of command.
- Report injuries and accidents. Recommend action to prevent recurrence.
- Ensure personal protective equipment is provided and used by all crew members.
- Take immediate corrective action when necessary to ensure crew safety.
Many of these same conditions will prevail during other regular field activities. Incumbent must wear protective clothing and other safety equipment. The employee must meet and maintain the arduous physical requirements established for this position, as evidenced by passing the standardized fitness test for arduous positions approved by the National Wildfire Coordinating Group for wildland fire agencies.
Advertised Pay: $26.72 hourly
Minimum Qualifications:
- NWCG Engine Boss qualification
- All qualifications and trainings of subordinate positions.
- Successful completion of the Work Capacity Test at Arduous Level annually
- Valid Driver's License
- Preferred Class B CDL License
