Equipment Technician

Under limited supervision, the Equipment Technician performs the maintenance and repair of various light to heavy City vehicles and equipment.

Equipment Technician 1 and 2 combined
  • Diagnose and repair light to heavy‑duty equipment, vehicles, and small engines using scan tools and online diagnostic databases.
  • Perform major and minor repairs and overhauls on engines, drive trains, transmissions, differentials, and related components.
  • Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic systems, including pumps, valves, cylinders, and hoses.
  • Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical, air conditioning, and computer‑related issues.
  • Design, fabricate, and repair metal projects using various welding methods.
  • Perform new vehicle and equipment set‑ups, including installation of lighting, safety equipment, and custom storage.
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs and service work orders in an automated maintenance program.
  • Research and order parts; maintain stock of shop supplies.
  • Schedule warranty work at dealerships and deliver vehicles as needed.
  • Travel to road and construction sites for service calls, including diagnostics, roadside repairs, or towing.
  • Service pumps, generators, and boilers.
  • Operate light to heavy‑duty equipment for diagnosis and repair.
  • Work collaboratively with equipment dealers, technicians, and operators to assess and resolve equipment issues.
  • Receive and handle freight deliveries for Public Works using forklifts and other equipment.
  • Safely handle Police Department squad equipment after firearms have been removed.
  • Clean and maintain the shop and equipment to ensure a safe and organized work environment.
  • Follow all safety protocols, report unsafe conditions, and work in compliance with established safety practices.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Equipment Technician I
  • Associate degree in diesel or automotive mechanics, or a related field.
  • Two years of experience in light and medium equipment and vehicle maintenance and repair operations.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.
  • Valid and unprohibited Class B Commercial Driver’s License with tanker and air brake endorsements within six months of hire; must maintain.
    • We will provide Class B CDL training to you at no cost beyond the minimal DMV testing & licensing fees.
    • You must be eligible to obtain a CDL in your state of residence (i.e. not disqualified due to driver's license suspension, revocation, or other reason).
  • Ability to create and maintain effective working relationships with peers, superiors, other City departments, vendors, contractors, external government agencies and organizations.
  • Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing.
Equipment Technician II
  • Associate degree in diesel or automotive mechanics, or a related field.
  • Four years of experience in light and heavy equipment and vehicle maintenance and repair operations.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.
  • ASE certification or equivalent.
  • Valid and unprohibited Class B Commercial Driver’s License with tanker and air brake endorsements within six months of hire; must maintain.
    • We will provide Class B CDL training to you at no cost beyond the minimal DMV testing & licensing fees.
    • You must be eligible to obtain a CDL in your state of residence (i.e. not disqualified due to driver's license suspension, revocation, or other reason)
  • Must obtain DOT certification/endorsements within six months of hire.
  • ICS 100 certification.
  • Ability to learn the SCADA system for all lift stations.
  • Ability to create and maintain effective working relationships with peers, superiors, other City departments, vendors, contractors, external government agencies and organizations.
  • Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing.
Preferred Qualifications
  • UST Class A and B Operator.
