Job Description

The Assistant Coach – Boys Swim and Dive position is responsible for assisting the team in training, instruction, conditioning, and performance. The role supports athletes in a healthy and safe environment, viewing winning as success and helping team members reach their goals.

Schedule

Hours vary and align with the NDHSAA schedule. For questions regarding the schedule, please contact the building-level athletic director.

Qualifications

Required:

  • NDHSAA coaching certification or the ability to obtain one.
  • Experience in the discipline preferred; previous coaching experience preferred.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to maintain a positive, respectful environment and adhere to NDHSAA guidelines.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Reach with hands and arms regularly.
  • Stand, walk, bend, talk, and hear as needed.
  • Maintain close and peripheral vision.
  • Lift up to 25 pounds regularly, up to 50 pounds occasionally, and push/pull up to 120 pounds.
  • Work with the public and WFPS staff managing several demands.
  • Possibility of outdoor work and exposure to weather.
  • Occasional contact with blood borne pathogens or other bodily fluids.
  • Noise level ranging from quiet to loud.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist in training, instruction, conditioning, performance, and selection of athletes.
  • Communicate professionally and respectfully with coaches, assistants, athletes, officials, opposing coaches, parents, and others.
  • Model sportsmanship and fair play per the Coach’s Code of Ethics and conference Sportsmanship Guidelines.
  • Understand cultural and global issues and their impact on learners.
  • Maintain a positive, committed mindset focused on athlete well‑being.
  • Develop positive working relationships with school administration, learners, educators, and the wider district community.
  • Share ideas to improve the overall learner and employee experience.
  • Develop, organize, and implement effective practices for athletes to learn proper skills and strategies at an elevated level.
  • Maintain communication with supervisor and director regarding feedback, career advancement, and growth opportunities.
  • Remain composed and proactive when dealing with stressful situations.
  • Seek out resolutions and take initiative to address knowledge gaps.
  • Adhere to WFPS and NDHSAA guidelines and policies.
  • Ensure health, safety, and well‑being of team members at practices, games, and transportation.
Language Skills
  • Read, write, and comprehend simple English instructions and short correspondence.
  • Communicate effectively verbally, expressively, and reactively.
  • Act as a subject‑matter expert for the given sport/activity.

  • Maintain confidentiality, discretion, and good judgment.
  • Adhere to the assigned work schedule by maintaining regular and punctual attendance.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • None; may supervise other coaches or learners if assigned.
