Road Equipment Operator - Highway Department
  • JOB SUMMARY:
  • Equipment Operators are responsible for performing general labor type duties, hand and power tool operation, equipment and truck operation and to perform required road maintenance and various road projects. This job description is not a contract and is subject to change.
  • JOB QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND

    EDUCATION:
  • Must be a high school graduate or GED certified, 18 years of age or above.
  • Must possess and retain a Class A CDL as issued by the Driver’s License Division of the State of North Dakota, with no serious driving convictions.
  • If no qualified applicant with current Class A CDL the County with consider a underfill of position. Employee will need to be in possession of Class A drivers license at completion of the six-month probationary period.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:
Work is performed under the direct supervision of the County department supervisor and Commissioners. The employee is expected to consult with his supervisor when he/she is unsure of how to proceed. Employee is to rely on his/her experience, judgment and knowledge to resolve routine problems.
  • ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Operates specialized medium to heavy equipment such as motor graders, front end loaders, snow blade plows during snow removal operations, single and tandem axle trucks and asphalt patching equipment used in spot graveling and road repair operations.
  • Operates equipment to anchor posts such as stop and yield signs.
  • Operates dump truck to haul materials such as snow, gravel and road patching material as required.
  • Operates equipment required to remove trees, shrubs, rocks and other obstructions within county road rights-of-way.
  • Plans for, schedules and conducts routine maintenance (along with his co-worker) on all heavy equipment that is located in or being used at the Rolette County Shops.
  • Performs shop work during the winter season, such as mechanical, mechanic’s assistant, welder and general laborer.
  • MARGINAL FUNCTIONS (Incidental Job Duties)
  • Checks and performs preventive maintenance such as oil change and grease jobs on assigned equipment; reports mechanical problems to Commissioner.
  • Maintains reports on work projects such as what was done and how much time.
  • Maintains a safe work area such as sweeping the shop floor, putting tools away and observe established safety practices and procedures when working with tools and equipment.
  • Prepare daily work log and record equipment maintenance activities.
  • Required to work after hours, weekends and holidays during road and weather emergencies.
Create a positive and productive work atmosphere by communicating and maintaining a professional manner with supervisor, employees and the general public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. In addition, the employee occasionally requires prolonged sitting, standing, lifting and/or move up to 100 pounds when changing the cutting edges on motor graders. Physical environment consists of indoor/outdoor exposure to various extremes of climate and weather. Will include physical motions of sitting, standing, walking, bending, pushing, pulling, crouching, twisting, grasping, climbing, lifting and carrying heavy items and other physical motions.

Occasionally required to work early shifts, respond to call back or emergency procedures at all hours of the day, including holidays and weekends. Employees in this position are subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing in accordance with the federal mandated Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991.
