Position Overview

The Special Education Teacher provides individualized instruction that supports each student's academic, behavioral, social, and emotional growth. Teachers create engaging learning experiences while fostering independence, confidence, and meaningful connections with students and families. This position offers the opportunity to make a lasting impact while working within a highly collaborative educational team.

Responsibilities
  • Inspire Student Growth
    • Plan and deliver engaging, differentiated instruction aligned with students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
    • Adapt lessons to meet individual learning needs and maximize student success.
    • Create a positive, structured classroom environment where students feel safe, respected, and motivated to learn.
  • Build Meaningful Relationships
    • Develop trusting relationships with students and families.
    • Support students' social-emotional development through positive behavior supports and crisis intervention when needed.
    • Foster a classroom culture built on respect, encouragement, and high expectations.
  • Monitor Progress
    • Collect and analyze academic and behavioral data to guide instruction.
    • Maintain accurate digital grade books and student records.
    • Prepare quarterly progress reports and communicate student growth with families.
  • Lead Special Education Services
    • Serve as an IEP Case Manager.
    • Develop, implement, and monitor IEP goals.
    • Collaborate in the development of Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBAs) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs).
    • Participate in Planning and Placement Team (PPT) meetings, annual reviews, parent conferences, and transition planning.
  • Collaborate with a Dedicated Team
    • Partner with related service providers, behavior specialists, administrators, and special area teachers to provide comprehensive support for every student.
    • Share strategies, accommodations, and modifications to promote student success across settings.
    • Participate in school events and contribute positively to our vibrant school community.
Qualifications

Required:

Connecticut State Special Education Certification (065, 165, or 265), strong classroom management and positive behavior support skills, experience working with students with diverse learning, behavioral, social, and emotional needs, ability to obtain Physical Management Training (PMT) certification within 60 days of employment and maintain certification.

Preferred:
Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Special Education, experience with evidence-based literacy and mathematics interventions, knowledge of individualized instruction and data-driven decision making.
