Position: Environmental Engineer, Air/Water/Waste Permitting at a New Chemical Plant | 3610790

Job Overview

A publicly traded global manufacturer of specialty chemicals and advanced electronic materials is scaling a breakthrough materials platform behind the AI, electric‑vehicle, datacenter, and semiconductor boom, a genuine first‑to‑market technology with a capital program north of $150M. They are standing up a major new production line at a fast‑growing plant, and you are the on‑site lead who builds its environmental compliance and safety program from scratch and owns it as it scales.

For a chemical or environmental engineer a few years in, this is the jump from supporting someone else’s program to owning your own site, end to end.

Ideal Candidate
  • You are a chemical or environmental engineer who already owns environmental permits and reporting at a manufacturing plant, and you want to run the whole program, not a slice of it.
  • You are comfortable, even energized, owning compliance in a facility that handles reactive and hazardous chemicals (flammable solvents, corrosives).
  • You like being the in‑plant expert and the regulator’s point of contact, out on the floor, not behind a desk.
  • You want in on a first‑to‑market operation that is scaling fast.
  • This is not the role for a safety generalist who has not personally owned air, water, and waste permitting, or for someone who wants a mature program with everything already documented.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead all site environmental permitting across air, water (wastewater and stormwater), and waste.
  • Keep the site compliant with every permit and file the required regulatory reports (Discharge Monitoring Reports, Toxic Release Inventory, Tier II, hazardous‑waste reports).
  • Be the point of contact for regulators (the Environmental Protection Agency, state environmental departments, and local authorities) during inspections and audits.
  • Run RCRA (Resource Conservation and Recovery Act) hazardous‑waste compliance: handling, storage, tracking, and disposal.
  • Stand up and run the ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management systems and the core safety programs (hot work, confined space, lockout/tagout, fall protection, respiratory).
  • Support Process Safety Management (PSM) as the site scales, and investigate incidents and near misses, building the compliance strategy as you go.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s in chemical engineering, environmental engineering or science, chemistry, or a closely related technical field.
  • 2 to 5 years in a chemical, specialty‑chemical, or process‑manufacturing plant.
  • Hands‑on ownership of environmental permits and regulatory reporting (air, water, or waste), this is the core of the role.
  • Working knowledge of RCRA, the Clean Water Act (wastewater and stormwater), and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) programs; ISO 14001 and 4501 auditing.
  • Process Safety Management exposure is a strong plus.
  • Comfort owning compliance in a hazardous‑chemical environment.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Base salary $71,822 to $107,732, plus a performance bonus.
  • Strong 401(k) match plus an additional company contribution, an employee stock purchase plan, medical with an employer health savings account (HSA) contribution, company‑paid life and disability, and generous paid time off (PTO).
Location

On‑site in West Haven, CT. This role is local; relocation is not offered, so you should already be within commuting distance.
