Summary
This position is located in the Facilities Management Service - West Haven VA Medical Center. The incumbent is a journeyman level plumber with extensive knowledge of plumbing methods and techniques. Must also have a basic knowledge of other occupations such as electrical, air conditioning, plastering, carpentry, and painting.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. Screening will first evaluate applicants against a screen‑out element. Those who meet the minimal qualification are considered further; others are eliminated. Eligibles are then rated against the remaining job elements which include:
- Interpret instructions, specifications, and blueprint reading
- Measuring instruments, shop practices, use hand tools, machine shop
- Work practices
- Experience referring to paid, unpaid, and volunteer work such as national service programs (Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) and other organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and may be credited.
- Applicants must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and the hours per week for each position to receive credit.
- Duties include, but are not limited to: maintaining and repairing, altering, installing, and inspecting all piping distribution lines, systems, and equipment necessary for operating the Medical Center.
- Installing new piping and insulation, cleaning and repairing steam coils, traps, and regulators, repacking and replacing steam, water, and other fluid valves.
- Measuring, cutting, bending pipe and tile, and caulking and sealing elbows, union joints, tile pipe, faucets, and shower drains.
- Removing, cleaning, reinstalling, or replacing joints and fixtures such as traps, faucets, and unions.
- Performing all work on steam equipment necessary for maintaining established temperature, pressures, and water level.
- Performing plumbing and steam fitting work on utility systems.
- Planning and laying out the installation and maintenance of various systems and equipment for routing, openings, slant, and level of gas and water lines, and the location and arrangement of water closets, sinks, and fire sprinkler equipment.
- Using tools and equipment such as plumb bobs, mercury gauges, dividers, closet augers, hydrostatic pumps, and lad pots.
- Work schedule:
Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm. - Physical requirements:
considerable movement around the hospital involving bending, lifting, working from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms. Occasionally lift equipment or materials weighing fifty pounds or more with proper equipment. Stand, stoop, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
