Director of Engineering

SUMMARY / OBJECTIVE

The Director of Engineering is responsible for the overall leadership, planning, and execution of all engineering, maintenance, and facility operations throughout the hotel. This role ensures the safety, functionality, sustainability, and aesthetic integrity of the property while maintaining compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on, solutions-driven leader with strong technical expertise, financial acumen, and a hospitality-forward mindset who can balance preventative maintenance, capital planning, and emergency response while supporting an elevated guest experience.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

* Act as a brand ambassador by embracing and exemplifying the hotel's values, standards, and voice.

* Direct and oversee all engineering and maintenance operations, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, life-safety systems, kitchen equipment, elevators, building automation, and guestroom maintenance.

* Develop, implement, and monitor a comprehensive preventative maintenance program to ensure asset longevity and minimize downtime.

* Lead, coach, and manage the engineering team to attract, retain, and develop high-performing talent while maintaining proper staffing levels and schedules.

* Ensure compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations, including Cal/OSHA, fire/life safety, environmental health, and energy codes.

* Maintain emergency preparedness plans and respond effectively to urgent maintenance, safety, and operational issues.

* Oversee vendor relationships, service contracts, and capital projects, including bid reviews, negotiations, and performance management.

* Prepare and manage the engineering, operating, and capital budgets; control expenses while maintaining quality and safety standards.

* Partner closely with Housekeeping, Food & Beverage, Front Office, and Security to ensure timely resolution of maintenance issues and minimal guest impact.

* Monitor the physical appearance of the property, ensuring all public spaces, back-of-house areas, and guestrooms meet brand and safety standards.

* Support sustainability initiatives, energy management programs, and utility optimization efforts.

* Maintain accurate records, logs, inspections, and compliance documentation.

* Participate in department head meetings, safety meetings, pre-cons, and capital planning sessions as required.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

* Minimum of 5 years of progressive engineering or facilities leadership experience in a hotel or hospitality environment.

* Strong technical knowledge of building systems, preventative maintenance, and life-safety operations.

* Proven ability to manage budgets, capital expenditures, and cost controls.

* Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to motivate, train, and develop diverse teams.

* Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and decision-making abilities.

* Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a guest-centric approach.

* Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).

* Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-ins as required.

* Ability to stand, walk, climb stairs and ladders, bend, kneel, and reach with hands and arms.

* Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
