Position: Elementary School Teacher (Dolphin Island)

Lach Klan School is located in the village of Lax Klan, also known as Kitkatla, on Dolphin Island, 60 kilometres south of Prince Rupert, BC. The Gitxaala, also known as Git Lax Moon, people of the saltwater, are one of the most ancient societies on the Northwest coast. The community has a population of approximately 400 people. Health and wellness guide a variety of community initiatives, often including Lach Klan School.

Our school includes pre‑school to grade 12 and currently serves 75 students. The area is home to a wide variety of animal and sea life, a multitude of islands, and breath‑taking views accessible by boat and seaplane. This area is abundant with prospect for an outdoor enthusiast.

Responsibilities
  • Differentiate lessons to meet the needs of all students, while helping to create a rigorous learning environment.
  • Build collaborative and effective relationships with students, staff, parents and the community.
  • Teach Literacy and Numeracy programs to students, teach and follow the BC curriculum.
  • Willing to lead and participate in extra‑curricular activities.
  • Be enthusiastic and create and participate fully in land‑based learning activities.
Desired Qualifications and Experience
  • Hold or be qualified for a valid BC Ministry of Education Teaching Certificate.
  • Bachelor of Education.
  • Knowledge of Aboriginal World View and understanding of First Nations communities in the Pacific Northwest.
  • Successful experience integrating local Indigenous culture and traditions into the curriculum, or familiarity with and understanding of local Indigenous culture and commitment to integrate it into the curriculum.
  • A proven ability to assess using multiple learning strategies.
  • Experience with adapting and modifying curriculum to meet the needs of students.
  • Experience teaching primary school students.
  • Strong literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Experience integrating technology into the teaching/learning environment.
  • Willingness to work and implement school initiatives and goals.
  • Experience teaching in a multiage group setting.
  • Willingness to work in a collaborative model with staff on the implementation of the school growth plan.
  • Specific coursework in meeting the needs of diverse students preferred.
  • Exceptional and creative teaching skills, including delivery of land‑based learning.
  • The ability to establish and maintain positive relations with students, staff, parents and the greater community.
