The Public Services Specialist I will be one of two front desk staff at SLCC's Jordan library branch that provides excellent service to students, faculty, staff and community members. The Jordan library serves an average of 1,600+ patrons each month and the Specialist I is responsible for engaging all patrons with professionalism, respect and courtesy, reflecting the Public Services department's mission and vision.
This position will work under the direction and guidance of a Supervisor at the Circulation Desk. The work schedule for this position will be: TBD

Essential Primary Responsibilities Assist library patrons by performing various duties at the circulation desk. This includes but is not limited to:
Serves as the initial contact for all patrons. Assisting patrons with basic reference and non-research questions. Assisting patrons with retrieval of library materials, both physical and electronic. Assisting patrons with accessing and utilizing library computers and printing. Answering the telephones and directing callers to appropriate SLCC departments. Conduct hourly library building walkthroughs. Checkout library materials to students including laptops, books, anatomy models, etc.
Connect patrons to other library and internal SLCC departments to resolve inquiries and needs Provide directional assistance to patrons in areas both inside and outside the library Assist in opening or closing the library in accordance with Library policy when working an opening or closing shift. Essential Secondary Responsibilities When not directly serving library patrons, a Specialist I participates in work that sustains the daily operations and mission of the library:
Assist in daily cleaning and maintenance of the library as needed or directed by a Supervisor. Support colleagues by orienting, mentoring and training new staff on library practices and policies. Complete weekly shelf reading assignments to ensure proper organization of physical materials Represent the library and engage with the SLCC community at various outreach events each semester. Create themed displays including books, DVDs, magazines, and other physical materials once a semester Create, review, and maintain accurate records in accordance with SLCC and the state of Utah's record retention requirements.
Improve job knowledge and skills by developing and completing professional development goals and training through the bi-annual Growth, Planning, and Support (GPS) process in collaboration with Supervisor Assist in the evaluation of Course Reserves material each semester and needed. Knowledge:
Familiarity with Microsoft 365 applications and other standard computer software/equipment. General library practices.
Skills:
Customer service. Interpersonal communication (both with patrons and coworkers). Perform well in occasional high-stress situations and demonstrate active listening skills. Experience using registers and other digital transaction systems. Abilities:
Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, abilities, cultures, ethnic backgrounds, etc., to maintain good working relationships across the College. Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities. Interact effectively with students, staff, faculty, and community members. Provide effective customer service to a diverse population.
Solve problems efficiently and effectively in accordance with SLCC Library and Salt Lake Community College policies. Express ideas and follow directions both verbally and in writing. Manage time effectively. Work independently with minimal supervision. Multi-task while on desk duty Stand, bend, and lift up to 10lbs, as well as push loaded book carts. Learn and utilize library classification systems, such as Library of Congress.
High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
Preferred QualificationsAssociate's degree or some college. Previous library experience. Familiarity with higher education systems, departments and procedures In addition to English, fluent in Spanish, Vietnamese, Tongan, Chinese, Samoan, German, Serbo-Croation, Portuguese, Russian or French.
