Position: SBA Loan Officer (St. George)

Job Summary

The SBA Loan Officer I is responsible for collecting, reviewing, evaluating, structuring, and originating SBA loan requests and all supporting documentation. This individual meets with applicants to explain credit policies and obtain loan information and documentation, serves borrowers promptly and professionally, and cross‑sells services to ensure the origination of quality loans. The role also includes business development and marketing of existing and prospective accounts.

Reports to the AVP SBA Sales.

Location and Schedule

Full Time, Off‑site Utah. Notes:
This job is not eligible to be performed in Colorado or Connecticut, either remotely or in‑person.

Responsibilities
  • Solicits and develops new business, takes applications, and processes preliminary documentation for loan requests.
  • Explains loan products and related credit criteria in a manner that elicits positive responses from members.
  • Conducts retention and development calls on existing and potential new members for both loans and deposits.
  • Generates loan originations consistent with an entry‑level threshold of the MACU SBA team and comparative mid‑market levels.
  • Evaluates credit data, cash flow, financial statements, and collateral to determine creditworthiness of applicants.
  • Educates members on credit union products and services and how they can better serve their individual financial needs.
  • Communicates clear reasons for denial in a timely manner to applicants when their loan request has been denied.
  • Presents and helps prepare credit proposals including recommendations for pricing, terms, and structure to approving authorities.
  • Performs personal and business financial statement analysis (income statement and balance sheet), cash flow, and business/personal tax returns.
  • Understands real estate transactions, construction loans, 1031 exchanges, MAI appraisals, title insurance, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborates with lending support teams to maintain high quality and operational efficiency in loan origination.
  • Ensures that members’ requests and questions are promptly resolved, with member satisfaction as a priority.
  • Conducts property inspections as necessary and may assist with the collection of delinquent accounts.
  • Completely records required pipeline, incentive, and related reports accurately and promptly.
  • Attends sales and loan committee meetings as required and participates in assigned training sessions to stay current on procedures and policies.
  • Establishes and maintains professional business relations with members, third parties, and trade professionals.
  • Identifies and develops SBA real estate sales opportunities for the Credit Union.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Experience
    • Minimum of 2 years in commercial lending, sales, or a related sales position.
    • Knowledge of commercial products and services.
  • Education
    • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, or a related field from an accredited university.
    • OR at least 2 years in a progressive lending position.
  • Licenses, Certifications, Registrations
    • Must qualify for access to SBA systems.
    • Must not be listed on any SAM search or SBA debarment lists.
  • Computer and Office Equipment Skills
    • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
    • Preferred experience with a loan origination system.
  • Language Skills
    • Demonstrated ability to express ideas, methodology, results, and recommendations verbally and in writing.
    • Ability to document outcomes and present information appropriately to stakeholders at all levels.

    Skills and Abilities
    • Proactive solicitation and relationship building via in‑person and telephone calls.
    • Financial statement analysis and cash flow, liquidity, debt‑to‑worth, and trend assessment.
    • Strong organizational and detail orientation with the capacity to handle multiple projects and deadlines.
    • Understanding of NCUA and credit union guidelines for commercial loans.
    • Knowledge of SBA eligibility per Standard Operating Procedures.
    • Loan closing knowledge, including real estate filings, lien positions, and collateral issues.
    • Ability to minimize risk and maximize borrowing potential for the Credit Union.
    • Effective presentation skills for the Credit Committee.
    • Underwriting skills: write analysis on repayment ability, cash flow, liquidity, leverage, collateral, management, and credit.
    • Self‑motivated, self‑managed, and adaptive to change with a problem‑solving mindset.
  • Physical Abilities / Working Conditions
    • Ability to sit, talk, and hear consistently.
    • Ability to stand, walk, and use hands to handle or reach occasionally.
    • Vision: close vision (20 inches or less) and distance vision (20 feet or more).
    • Weight lift: up to 10 pounds occasionally.
    • Noise environment: moderate noise typical of a business office.
