About The Role

The Associate Environmental Safety Technician (Radiation) role offers hands-on technical experience within a large, multi-campus research university that supports a wide range of diagnostic and analytical X-ray units and diverse uses of radioactive materials. The position provides exposure to varied research and operational environments, work with specialized radiation safety instrumentation, and participation in Environmental Health and Safety activities that directly support Purdue University’s research, teaching, and public service missions.

The breadth of radiation sources and applications across campus creates a dynamic and engaging work environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Specialize in radioactive materials management in research and operational settings
  • Sample and analyze liquid radioactive waste, review analytical results, and determine appropriate disposal methods in accordance with procedures and regulations
  • Perform routine surveillance of facilities to verify proper radioactive material handling, storage, and contamination control practices
  • Calibrate, check, and maintain radiation detection and measurement instruments to ensure reliable performance
  • Assist with spill response and decontamination activities as requested, including follow-up surveys and documentation
  • Cross-train and provide support to other Environmental Health and Safety program areas as operational needs arise
  • Provide guidance, on-the-job assistance, and informal training to lower-level employees or student staff
  • Participate in problem solving that requires gathering information, analyzing options, and helping develop effective resolutions

What We re Looking For



Education and Experience

Required:

  • A High School Degree or High School Equivalency (HSE)
  • A valid driver’s license is required

Preferred:

  • Previous experience in radioactive materials handling
  • College coursework and/or a basic knowledge of science, biology, physics, math and/or chemistry
Skills Needed
  • Good work organization, written and verbal communication skills and instructional skills are required
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including: respiratory protection, gloves, goggles, etc.
  • Must be able to:
    • lift and carry 25 to 50 lbs. frequently, and up to 60 lbs. occasionally
    • wear respiratory protective equipment. Required to pass an annual physical examination
  • May be required to carry a pager and be subject to 24-hour callback
Preferred
  • Knowledge of campus buildings and locations
  • Basic computer skills
