Academic Success Coach
Arkansas State University Mid-South, a comprehensive community college serving Crittenden County, Arkansas, and the greater Memphis area, seeks an energetic, student-centered, and collaborative professional to provide academic support, intentional guidance, and proactive outreach to students with identified academic risks. The Academic Success Coach (ASC) will work closely with academic advisors, faculty, and student success staff to assist students on Academic Probation in developing effective academic strategies, navigating college expectations, and making progress toward successful course completion.
In addition to individualized coaching, the ASC will teach one section of Strategies for Success each semester to support early skill-building and persistence. This position reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Success. The position is a full-time, 12-month role with full College benefits.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in education, counseling, student services, academic advising, psychology, social work, or related field.
- Two years' experience in academic advising, coaching, counseling, or related student support roles.
- Proficient technology skills in MS applications and comfort using student information or retention systems.
- Strong written and oral communication skills; ability to build rapport with diverse student populations.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively within a student success team.
- Ability to work occasional evenings or weekends as needed to support student programs.
Preferential Qualifications
- Master's degree in higher education, counseling, student affairs, academic advising, or related field.
- Experience supporting academically at-risk, probation, or conditionally admitted students.
- Knowledge of academic success strategies, student development theory, or motivational interviewing.
- Experience teaching, facilitating workshops, or supporting student success courses.
- Experience working with diverse populations representing various academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and learning backgrounds.
Responsibilities
- Provide individualized academic coaching to students on Academic Probation focused on academic planning, effective study habits, time management, and personal accountability.
- Monitor academic progress closely, including course performance and participation; conduct proactive outreach and follow-up with assigned students.
- Assist students in navigating college expectations, policies, and success strategies, making referrals to tutoring, counseling, advising, and other campus resources as appropriate.
- Teach one section of Strategies for Success each semester, including preparing course materials, facilitating classroom instruction, and assessing student learning.
- Collaborate closely with faculty and academic advisors to identify students experiencing academic difficulty and coordinate timely interventions.
- Maintain accurate documentation, case notes, and progress reports for all assigned students to support institutional retention efforts.
- Participate in student success initiatives, onboarding activities, and campus-wide retention programming as assigned.
- Engage in ongoing professional development and serve on college committees as needed.
- Update the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Success regularly regarding caseload trends, challenges, and progress toward student success goals.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of student persistence and completion.
