Instructor of First-Year Experience & Student Success
Arkansas State University Mid-South, a comprehensive community college serving Crittenden County, Arkansas, and the greater Memphis area, seeks a student-centered, collaborative, and engaging professional to support student onboarding, engagement, retention, and persistence efforts. The instructor of First-Year Experience & Student Success provides instruction in student success courses while coordinating First-Year Experience initiatives, New Student Orientation, student outreach efforts, and early intervention activities.
This position is designed to support the College's First-Year Experience and student retention efforts through a combination of teaching, student outreach, orientation coordination, and intervention activities. The position reports to the Vice Chancellor for Learning and Instruction and works closely with the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Success. The position is a full-time, 10-month faculty appointment with full College benefits.
- Bachelor's degree required.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to build rapport with diverse student populations.
- Proficient technology skills in Microsoft Office applications and learning management systems.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students.
- Master's degree preferred.
- Experience teaching in higher education.
- Experience in student success initiatives, advising, academic coaching, orientation programming, recruitment, retention, or related student support services.
- Experience using student success technologies such as Starfish.
- Experience planning and coordinating student engagement activities and events.
- Experience working with first-generation, academically underprepared, or at-risk students.
- Instruction & Student Learning
- Teach four sections of College Success and one section of Strategies for Success each semester.
- Develop, maintain, and update course materials, assignments, and instructional content within Canvas.
- Assess student learning outcomes and maintain accurate academic records.
- Maintain office hours and provide academic support to students.
- Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and institutional assessment activities as required.
- New Student Orientation Coordination
- Coordinate and facilitate New Student Orientation sessions throughout the academic year.
- Manage and maintain the online New Student Orientation course.
- Coordinate orientation logistics, materials, and communications.
- Track orientation participation and completion and conduct follow-up outreach as needed.
- Collaborate with faculty and staff to ensure successful onboarding experiences for new students.
- First-Year Experience Programming
- Plan, coordinate, and implement a minimum of one First-Year Experience student engagement activity each month.
- Promote student involvement, connection, and engagement among first-year students.
- Assist with Welcome Week and other first-year student initiatives as appropriate.
- Communicate and encourage student participation in academic success workshops and related programming offered through TRIO Student Support Services and other campus departments.
- Student Success & Navigator Support
- Serve as a primary point of contact for prospective and current students in General Education and Health Studies pathways during the academic year (August–May).
- Respond to student inquiries and conduct proactive outreach to prospective students.
- Assist students in navigating enrollment processes and accessing college resources.
- Maintain appropriate documentation of student interactions and referrals in Starfish.
- Collaborate with Admissions, Advising, Financial Aid, and Student Success staff to support student enrollment and persistence.
- Early Alert Intervention & Retention Support
- Review and respond to Early Alert referrals on a regular basis.
- Attempt outreach to all students identified through the Early Alert process.
- Document contact attempts, outcomes, and referrals in Starfish.
