Job Description

Position Title: Construction Materials Testing Technician

Location: West Memphis, AR

Pay Range: $20-$28 per hour (based on education, certification, and experience)

Position Type: Full-time

Schedule: Varied

Position Summary

This role supports a long‑term, high‑profile mega project by ensuring materials and workmanship meet project specifications through field testing, construction observation, and inspection services.

Responsibilities
  • Perform field and laboratory testing on soil, concrete, asphalt, grout, and mortar.
  • Conduct daily construction inspections and quality observations.
  • Prepare and collect samples; document on‑site activities per project and industry standards.
  • Communicate test results and observations clearly and timely to project teams.
  • Maintain and calibrate equipment, including nuclear density gauges, per safety and maintenance guidelines.
  • Report non‑conforming items to project supervision and participate in corrective actions.
  • Transport, operate, and care for testing equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Receive, understand, and execute written and verbal directions.
  • Review specifications for civil and structural plans and identify sections applicable to the scope of work.
  • Interact and communicate daily with contractors, technicians, and project managers.
  • Submit daily field reports documenting testing, inspections, and field observations.
  • Document and communicate non‑conforming items to designated project supervision.
  • Maintain, clean, and calibrate all assigned equipment according to applicable codes and standards.
  • Use a nuclear density gauge safely and in accordance with the Radiation Safety Program Policy.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to cover absences and balance workload.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • ACI Field Level 1 Certification (concrete testing).
  • Strong understanding of soil mechanics, field proctors, and field density testing.
  • Basic knowledge of sample preparation, collection, and testing; field observations and documentation of construction activities.
  • Ability to pass relevant tests and/or achieve valid signatures.
  • Ability to create and maintain accurate test records and prepare understandable reports.
  • Skilled in use of computers and common software applications.
  • Ability to learn company software and programs.
  • Ability to be trained and follow directions.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Professional dress, speech, and conduct.
  • Oath to work ethically, honestly, and safely at all times.
  • Capacity to drive a company vehicle and adhere to company operational and safety guidelines.
Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
  • ICC Soils or ACI Aggregate Base certifications.
  • Other materials testing certifications from nationally recognized organizations.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Indoor and outdoor work with exposure to weather conditions.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Can climb ladders and scaffolding.
  • Can physically maneuver construction sites and excavations.
  • Adequate visual and hearing ability for written and verbal communication in English.
