Job Description

Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) develops and supports nuclear propulsion systems for U. S. Navy aircraft carriers and submarines. We design the world's most advanced, safe, and reliable reactor plants. Electrical Engineers at NNL are engaged throughout their careers in the design, development, deployment, analysis, troubleshooting, and testing of electrical systems associated with shipboard instrumentation and control, power electronics, rotating equipment, and laboratory test facilities.

This diversity in job opportunities provides the NNL Electrical Engineers with challenging work assignments and a means to continue gaining technical skills and broadening their experience throughout their career. The successful candidate will work in the Power Technology unit or the Integrated Power Systems unit within the New Design business area and will be required to perform the various tasks and duties outline below for various Naval platforms.

The duties include:

  • Perform the design, analysis, and subsequent testing in the field of electrical engineering, including, but not limited to, power electronics, data acquisition, controls, electric machines, power systems, etc.
  • Perform circuit and system design by manufacturing prototypes and integrating system hardware and software and performing qualification testing
  • Procure equipment to support verification and validation of design and analysis efforts
  • Team with other engineers to ensure integration of activities and plans
  • Interface with internal and external organizations
  • Write design documents, test procedures, and generate test reports
  • Prepare project plans to accomplish assigned work
Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill
  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in electrical engineering; or
  • Masters degree from an accredited college or university in electrical engineering.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience or classwork in power electronics, control systems, power systems, and/or electric machines.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills through previous work and/or academic experience.
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, teaming, and communication skills.

Pay Range

$63,300.00 - $96,900.00 annually. Salary information provided is a general guideline only. Annual salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation. Naval Nuclear Laboratory personnel are FMP employees who work at four DOE facilities:
Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, Kenneth

A. Kesselring Site, and Naval Reactors Facility, and at the U.S. Department of Defense‑owned Nuclear Power Training Unit‑Charleston.
