DescriptionThe Naval Nuclear Laboratory develops advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology to ensure the safety and reliability of the U.S. Navy's submarine and aircraft carrier fleet. We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join our Manufacturability team in support of the Propulsion Plant Team Trainer (PPTT) project.
The PPTT project is a multi‑site organization responsible for the design, production, testing, and delivery of advanced training simulators. This role offers the opportunity to collaborate across disciplines and locations while contributing to technically complex, mission‑critical systems.
Responsibilities- Collaborate with multi‑disciplinary engineering teams across multiple locations.
- Review and disposition supplier mechanical design submittals to validate compliance with technical requirements.
- Interface with internal and external stakeholders to ensure project objectives are met.
- Support design reviews and technical interchanges with suppliers.
- Apply and interpret ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) principles.
- Review, understand, and apply relevant engineering codes and standards (e.g., ASME, AWS).
- Provide manufacturability input throughout the design and production lifecycle.
- Make technical recommendations to senior project personnel.
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited college or university.
- Minimum of 3 years of professional experience as a Mechanical Engineer.
Desired:
- Experience with Solid Works or equivalent 3D CAD modeling software.
- Experience with Model‑Based Design methodologies.
- Strong background in Design for Manufacturability (DFM).
- Experience implementing GD&T in engineering designs.
- Experience supporting machining and a variety of welding processes across design and production.
- Ability to effectively review and assess supplier designs and manufacturing approaches.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to think creatively and solve complex technical problems.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
- 3–9 years of experience – $120,000–$127,000.
- 10+ years of experience – $128,000–$145,000.
