ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking a Specialized Engineer III to join our team supporting the Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) at their Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory site! This position is full-time and will be based out of West Mifflin, PA.

Responsibilities

  • Support the evaluation and development of metallic and non-metallic repair technologies for Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) applications.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to identify, research, test, and evaluate repair methods and technologies.

  • Assess repair technologies through laboratory testing and commercial vendor/subcontract activities.

  • Leverage established industrial processes, including welding, machining, fabrication, and related repair techniques, when developing and evaluating repair solutions.

  • Assist with the planning, coordination, execution, and follow-through of engineering projects and work efforts.

  • Develop and maintain technical instructions, procedures, documentation, and work plans supporting repair technology development and deployment.

  • Prepare technical reports, submittals, evaluations, recommendations, and other engineering documentation.

  • Track procurement activities, project expenditures, and budget performance associated with assigned projects.

  • Coordinate with stakeholders and support organizations across NNL, Naval shipyards, Naval Reactors Headquarters, vendors, and other external partners.

  • Support project planning, equipment testing, technology qualification, and repair deployment activities.

  • Monitor and report project schedules, milestones, technical progress, risks, and overall performance within NNL's repair technology development programs.

  • Interface with commercial vendors and subcontractors to support technology development, testing, procurement, and implementation activities.

  • Travel periodically to vendor facilities and Naval shipyards to support project planning, equipment testing, and field deployment of repair technologies.

  • Contribute to the evaluation of both established and emerging repair technologies to improve the effectiveness and reliability of Naval repair capabilities.

Requirements

  • Education & Years of Experience – Bachelor’s Degree in Welding Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related frield from an accredited college or university and 5+ years of work experience OR Masters Degree in Welding Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related frield ffrom an accredited college or university and 3+ years of experience.

  • Citizenship – To be considered, you must be a United States (U.S.) citizen due to the federal nature of the work.

  • Clearance – To be considered, you MUST be able to obtain and maintain a government issued clearance before you can start.

    • Candidates with an active DOE "L" Clearance or DOD "Secret" clearance are HIGHLY DESIRED.

  • Must have experience making technical presentations.

  • Lead/execute laboratory operations in a productive, timely, and compliant manner.

Desired Skills

  • Experience developing, testing, evaluating, and qualifying repair procedures and technologies in a laboratory environment.

  • Knowledge of or experience with welding and fabrication processes, including:

  • Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW/TIG)

  • Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG)

  • Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW/Stick)

  • Familiarity with epoxies, composites, and non-metallic repair methods.

  • Knowledge of mechanical repair, machining, and fabrication processes.

  • Ability to develop, read, and interpret engineering specifications, technical drawings, and engineering standards.

  • Experience planning and executing technical work programs and laboratory testing activities.

  • Ability to design experiments, develop test plans, collect data, and analyze experimental results.

  • Strong technical writing skills, including preparation of engineering reports, procedures, test documentation, and recommendations.

  • Demonstrated hands-on experience executing laboratory or engineering test work.

  • Familiarity with inspection and quality verification methods is preferred.

  • Ability to work effectively with fabrication vendors, shipyards, engineers, and other technical stakeholders.

  • Experience supporting technology transfer, qualification, and implementation of new repair processes.

  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.

  • Demonstrated initiative, creativity, and ability to work independently on complex technical assignments.

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is comprised of the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, located in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory located in Niskayuna, New York, the Kesselring Site, located in West Milton, New York, and the Naval Reactor Facility located in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Together, they develop advanced technology for the United States Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, ensure the safety and reliability of naval nuclear reactors, and train Sailors who operate reactors in submarines and aircraft carrier fleets (energy.gov).
