Position: Medical Transport Coordinator - STAT MedEvac/UPMC PARC

The UPMC Center for Emergency Medicine is looking to hire a Transport Coordinator to support STAT Med Evac and UPMC PARC.

UPMC PARC operates 24/7 and requires continuous staffing. Candidates must be flexible and available for any shift. Daylight and evening shifts are typically 8 or 10 hours, depending on departmental needs, while overnight shifts are 10 hours. Additionally, shifts include rotating weekends and holidays.

The opportunity to telecommute some shifts may be granted after a minimum of six months of work in office in West Mifflin, PA; as well as successful demonstration of job responsibilities and approval of STAT Med Evac Communications leadership.

Purpose

UPMC PARC serves as UPMC's hub for medical transportation needs, both urgent and non-urgent. By maintaining relationships with local EMS, PARC helps to facilitate patient transfer needs to and from UPMC hospital facilities as well as skilled nursing facilities and within the community.

Responsibilities
  • Provide and assist care management, social services, physicians, and nursing with emergent and non-emergent medical transportation coordination needs, and other calls received for all facilities. Efficiently and accurately transcribe interactions on calls. All documentation on transfers to be completed in the department database accurately and timely.
  • Answer calls into the UPMC transport center (PARC) to assist with medical transportation: the scope is unlimited (local and worldwide). Responsible for meeting department benchmarks related to call handling and transferring.
  • Appropriate escalation of issues as determined by department protocols.
  • Knowledge of multiple communication methods utilized by the department.
  • Knowledge of PA DOH EMS scope of practice and formulary.
  • Knowledge of various insurance requirements related to ambulance transportation.
  • Maintain a familiarity with internal systems available and necessary in the performance of the job.
  • Maintains knowledge of local EMS systems and geography for Western Pennsylvania, Eastern Ohio, and Northern West Virginia. Uses available resources and follows the directions of management in the selection and scheduling of appropriate services.
  • Coordinates emergent, urgent, and non-emergent medical transports utilizing both ECIN and manual processes; verifies appropriate insurance coverage as required, and documents all transports according to protocol.
  • Demonstrates competency in assigning requests for service to the most appropriate patient transport mode (i.e., CCT, ALS, BLS or WCV).
  • Demonstrates interpersonal and organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize transports according to protocols, which nurture relationships with both internal and external customers.
  • Make outbound calls to coordinate transport requests, and to seek additional details when needed, take incoming calls to provide requested assistance.
  • Display attention to detail and the ability to multitask.
  • Make appropriate decisions based on the established protocols.
  • Exhibit strong interpersonal and communication skills, remaining professional and courteous when dealing with sensitive issues and stressful circumstances.
  • Exhibit strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Assure positive customer relations and service satisfaction.
  • Performs other reporting functions such as unusual operational situations, injury reports or other reporting as outlined within departmental guidelines.
  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Five (5) years customer service experience or call center experience, OR two (2) years emergency or healthcare call center, OR Four (4) years in a healthcare business setting, OR two (2) years of direct patient care experience with EMS or in a role such as a Medical Assistant, LPN or PCT, OR successful completion of an LPN or RN training program.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology required.
  • Formal medical training is preferred.
  • Computer literacy/data entry skills.
