Summary
The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) position provides clerical and administrative support to patients and staff in the VA Care in the Community Service at the West Palm Beach
- Florida VA Medical Center.
Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements- United States Citizenship:
Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. - English Language Proficiency:
Must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005 - Part II
- Chapter 3 - Section A - paragraph 3.j. - Experience and
Education:
Six months experience of clerical, office, customer service, or other administrative work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position. - Education:
Two years above high school level, or equivalent combination of experience and education qualifying for entry level based on the Grandfathering Provision. - Grade Determinations:
One-year equivalent to at least next lower grade level (GS-5). - Medical Support Assistant (Advanced) - GS-679-6 Experience.
- One year of experience equivalent to the GS-679-5 grade level.
- Assignment:
The AMSA provides specialized and expert administrative patient support while working collaboratively in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model. - Work involves specialized administrative judgment and flexible use of a wide range of clinical flow processes related to access to care across multiple clinics and community resources.
- Recommend changes to existing clinic procedures based on current administrative guidelines.
- Expertise in utilizing advanced patient systems in support of multiple clinics involved in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model.
- Coordinates with the patient care team to review clinic appointment availability and ensure schedules are monitored to support clinic needs and make adjustments as necessary.
- Communicate with the patient care team, other VA medical centers, and non-VA medical facilities, assisting with communications during inpatient to outpatient discharge.
- Prepare correspondence to notify patients of normal lab results and manage a system for follow‑up care such as consults and tests.
- Candidates must demonstrate knowledge, skills, and abilities to collaborate and communicate with a wide range of medical clinicians, set priorities, organize work, and comply with policies and regulations.
- Provide clerical and administrative support to patients and staff.
- Serve as the administrative subject matter expert within the patient care team.
- Ensure that all consults and scheduling practices are acted upon in accordance with national directives, regulations, and standard operating procedures.
- Develop and maintain effective communication with the patient and interdisciplinary care team.
- Facilitate and process secure messaging with the patient and care team.
- Monitor pre‑appointment requirements to assure readiness for patient visits or procedures (e.g., x‑ray, lab work).
- Obtain identifying information and determine the nature of the visit or call.
- Perform administrative duties in support of provider panel management using VHA databases.
- Orient medical staff to basic administrative policies and procedures related to outpatient scheduling.
- Work schedule:
flexible shifts covering weekend and holiday coverage. - The AMSA is not authorized for relocation, recruitment incentives, or telework.
