At the South Florida Water Management District (District), we are committed to making Florida a better place to live and work!

The District is a regional governmental agency that manages the water resources in the central and southern parts of the state. It operates over 2,000 miles of canals and levees, hundreds of water control structures, and dozens of pump stations to provide flood protection for over 9 million residents. Projects include pump stations, water control structures, reservoirs, stormwater treatment areas and associated works.

The District is actively engaged in the design and construction of multiple large earthen, above ground, high hazard reservoirs with the US Army Corps of Engineers and is developing a Dam Safety Program in support of these new reservoirs. Incumbent will be providing engineering support for the dam safety program for these reservoirs and collaborate with technical representatives from other agencies associated with dam safety as it relates to design, construction, operation, maintenance, monitoring and inspection.

In addition, the District operates an extensive microwave network for remote data acquisition and SCADA operations of facilities. This position will also require interacting with SCADA and IT teams as designs are advanced through implementation of the SCADA and dam safety instrumentation.

The District is seeking a seasoned professional engineer with experience and training in dam safety and knowledgeable of USACE, FEMA and USDA policies regarding dam safety and shall assist the Dam Safety Program Manager with implementing and managing the Dam Safety Program for District reservoirs including, but not limited to, the design review, construction, startup, inspections, data monitoring and analysis, contract management as needed and other items as identified.

The position will require training of District staff in observing and reporting dam safety hazards, maintaining Emergency Action Plans and conducting training exercises, monitoring routine field inspection reports, monitoring the dam safety data management system for system generated alerts, diagnosing the cause of alerts, and working with the Dam Safety Program Manager in determining the appropriate response to such alerts.

It shall require preparation of annual dam safety reports and working with the Dam Safety Program Manager to develop annual budgets for maintenance of the dams.

In support of the Dam Safety Program, incumbent may prepare or present to management and multi‑agency groups; keeps abreast of new technologies and discipline‑specific trends; proactively applies new information to all work assignments and shares such information throughout the District.

Supports emergency operations and provides significant input into the disaster recovery plan. Duties also include inspecting damages, assisting in the development of SOWs for emergency repairs, developing cost estimates for emergency repairs/services, assisting in obtaining funding (federal, state, local or other) and in obtaining contractual support services to make emergency repairs.
