Position

Summary

Serving as the owner’s electrical technical authority for the data center facility, this role provides engineering leadership and independent oversight of the critical power systems inside the building across the full project lifecycle — from design through construction, commissioning, and into operations. Scope runs from the facility service entrance downstream through building distribution, backup power, and white‑space power to the rack.

The engineer sets and enforces electrical design intent, directs external Engineers of Record (EORs) and design consultants, reviews and approves key deliverables, and provides hands‑on field support through energization and turnover. Rather than owning a single phase, this role is the consistent electrical voice of the owner across every stage at the facility level — ensuring reliability, constructability, code compliance, and standardization as projects move from concept to live operation.

This is an individual‑contributor role that leads through engineering authority rather than direct reports.

Core Functions
  • Act as the owner’s electrical technical authority for the data center facility across all lifecycle phases — design, construction, commissioning, and operations — providing independent review, sign‑off, and technical guidance.
  • Own electrical design intent for the facility’s critical power systems: building distribution, switch gear/switchboards, UPS and battery systems, backup generation and paralleling, PDUs, busway/RPPs, and white‑space power to the rack.
  • Drive high‑density AI/HPC power design — 100kW+ racks, high‑voltage DC (e.g., 800

    VDC) distribution architectures, and block/step‑load behavior for GPU training clusters.
  • Own the electrical interface to liquid cooling — CDU power, leak‑detection interlocks, and coordination of direct‑to‑chip and rear‑door heat‑exchange systems.
  • Establish and maintain Owner Design Criteria (ODC) and electrical standards for the facility; enforce consistency across sites and projects.
  • Direct and audit EORs and third‑party design firms at key milestones (e.g., 60/90/IFC); review and approve deliverables, resolve technical gaps, and hold partners accountable to schedule and quality.
  • Own the facility power system model (ETAP/SKM) as the single source of truth — load flow, short‑circuit, protective device coordination, and arc‑flash studies — and maintain study cadence, the arc‑flash label program, and validation of redundancy schemes (N+1, 2N, 2N+1).
  • Review single‑line diagrams, design basis documents, grounding/bonding schemes, and equipment specifications for code compliance, constructability, and reliability.
  • Coordinate electrical scope with mechanical/cooling loads and with EPMS/BMS controls integration for monitoring, metering, and sequence of operations.
  • Review contractor submittals, shop drawings, and RFIs during construction; provide timely, technically sound responses that protect design intent.
  • Evaluate equipment substitutions and change orders for technical acceptability, reliability impact, and code compliance before approval.
  • Feed lessons learned into repeatable reference designs and master equipment specifications to drive standardization across the portfolio.
  • Support equipment procurement: contribute technical specifications, evaluate vendor proposals, and attend Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) and inspections as needed.
