Job Description

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Laboratory Scientist position, in West Palm Beach, Florida for our Earth and Environment Business Line. This position will be embedded full-time at a client’s office located in West Palm Beach in their chemistry laboratory. This position will be responsible for receiving and logging samples delivered to the client’s laboratory and may also include other responsibilities with other client departments such as Client Services, Data Validation, Analytical Laboratory, and Quality Assurance.

Candidates must be adaptable in supporting a variety of laboratory needs and be able to positively interact, communicate, and collaborate with a variety of client laboratory staff at varying levels.

Your Impact

Work at the direction of WSP’s laboratory client on a variety of projects, to address their needs, achieve their goals, and meet their success criteria.

  • Core Responsibilities:
    • Sample Management and Log-In
    • Receiving Operations:
      Responsible for the receipt of all courier packages (Fed Ex, UPS, USPS, etc.) and notification of deliveries to staff.
    • Standardized Intake:
      Assure that all samples delivered to the laboratory are handled in accordance with the current log‑In Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
    • Processing Timelines:
      Perform all essential log‑in duties—including manual entry, sample pH verification, and field data uploads—within 24 hours of receipt.
    • Quality Review:
      Perform a thorough review for completion and accuracy prior to the final submission of all log‑in documentation.
    • Professional Communication:
      Communicate professionally and effectively with all external/internal customers regarding sample management details, including cancellations, delivery, and storage issues.
  • Technical Support
    • System Maintenance:
      Perform daily DI water system checks and Carboy maintenance, and ensure all laboratory glassware or sample bottles are cleaned and prepared.
    • Regulatory Compliance:
      Operate within an environmental laboratory certified under the National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (NELAP) and adhere to the Chemical Hygiene Plan.
    • Inter‑Departmental

      Collaboration:

      Work with Water Quality Monitoring (WQM) staff to ensure proper quality standards and conduct analysis in cooperation with a staff chemist or supervisor.
  • Documentation and Quality Control
    • Record Keeping:
      Properly maintain all related sample documentation and maintenance logs for supporting equipment.
    • Compliance Documentation:
      Ensure Analyst Credentials are kept up to date on the laboratory SharePoint site and perform annual reviews of primary SOPs and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
    • Audit Readiness:
      Scan and file each completed Chain of Custody (COC) to ensure that validation has the correct documentation to audit the Work Orders.
  • Training and Development
    • Staff Mentorship:
      Responsible for the training of new log‑in staff.
    • Continuous Improvement:
      Offer input on SOPs and assist with QA functions as needed.
  • Company Standard Compliance
    • Coordinate with your WSP Project Manager and/or WSP Supervisor to meet corporate employment requirements (e.g., required annual training, timesheet submittals, etc.).
    • Comply with safety guidelines and site‑specific laboratory procedures.
    • Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
    • Self‑manage assigned workload.
Who You Are

Required Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree (i.e., Associate of Arts [AA] or Associate of Science [AS]).
  • 2 years of experience in coordinating laboratory projects or working in a laboratory.
  • Work Environment/Physical Demands:
    • Work is performed in a laboratory where employees routinely use numerous chemical compounds and includes periodic exposure to refrigerated conditions.
    • Requires lifting up to 40 pounds, prolonged standing, and repetitive bending and reaching.
    • Proficient self‑leadership with attention to detail, multi‑tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
