Job SummaryShop Diesel Truck & Bus Mechanic duties include performing licensed DOT inspections, preventative maintenance, light and follow‑up repairs, light mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronic diagnostics, and other assignments as directed. The mechanic may conduct more advanced diagnostics and repairs under supervision of a Sr. Shop Diesel Technician or higher, and will continue to learn advanced mechanical and diagnostic techniques. The role requires adherence to company policies, high performance metrics, and a strong commitment to safety and quality.
Duties- Always follow and comply with safe operating practices and procedures.
- Independently determine parts required for each job and interact with the Shop Parts Department to obtain them.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment; assist in daily cleanup of tools, parts, and equipment.
- Apply knowledge acquired through formal training or on‑the‑job experience to perform duties; work with, understand, and evaluate technical information.
- Work with Service Writer to assess customer needs, provide information or assistance, resolve problems, or satisfy expectations.
- Manage concurrent assigned tasks, prioritizing activities and time allocations effectively.
- Act with integrity, demonstrate honesty, keep commitments, and maintain confidentiality and ethical standards.
- Perform scheduled preventative maintenance (PM), DOT inspections, and follow‑up repairs on light, medium, and heavy‑duty vehicles in a shop environment.
- Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment.
- Use hand tools, precision instruments, diesel tools, welding equipment, lifts, and jacks.
- Document according to company standards and upload pictures, parts used, and findings on Repair Orders (RO) using company issued devices and/or Karmak application.
- Accurately complete DOT forms and all other required documentation in a timely fashion.
- Maintain a high level of productivity and work within or close to standard repair times.
- Communicate with Shop Manager and support team to obtain approvals on repair estimates, retrieve purchase order numbers, and discuss RO findings.
- Perform all work in compliance with safety, health, environmental policies, and federal regulations including OSHA, EPA, and DOT.
- Participate and complete all company required safety training.
- Maintain shop‑assigned service trucks; conduct safety checks and daily pre/post‑trip inspections.
- Perform minor adjustments and repairs on various truck equipment including electrical, brake, cooling systems, starters/alternators, fan clutches, engine electronics, diesel steering systems, engines (gas and diesel), transmissions, clutches, differentials, etc.
- Adhere to company policies, processes, and procedures.
- Diagnose, adjust, and repair various truck and bus equipment including electrical, brake, cooling, starters, alternators, air conditioning, fan clutches, engine electronics, diesel steering, engines, transmissions, clutches, differentials, etc.
- Identify problems, determine relevance of information, and use sound judgment to evaluate alternatives.
- Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions using instruments such as handheld computers and pressure gauges.
- Assist Shop Diesel Technician I with diagnostics.
- High School Diploma or GED preferred.
- Possess and supply a set of hand tools necessary to perform duties.
- Minimum of 3 years experience as a Diesel Technician on medium to heavy‑duty vehicle repair or equivalent education, certifications, or skill combination.
- Bus maintenance experience preferred.
- Participate in and complete all company required training.
- Compliance with DOT FMCSA regulations; successful completion of DOT‑regulated background screening, DOT physical, or valid DOT medical card.
- Candidate must be at least 21 years or older.
- Safe driver required; 3‑year MVR review; valid state driver license and ability to maintain Driver Qualification File.
