Position: Nursing Assistant, Variable Shifts

Job Summary

The Nursing Assistant at North Mississippi Health Services Systems is responsible for providing routine patient care, assisting with activities of daily living, coordinating patient care activities, and maintaining inventory control in an assigned unit. The role requires effective communication, problem‑solving skills, and the ability to prioritize patient care while maintaining a positive and caring attitude towards patients, staff, and visitors.

Job Functions
  • Patient Care:
    • Performs tasks related to routine patient care within an assigned unit under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
    • Assists with patient’s plan of care by providing and/or assisting with activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, grooming, mobility, and comfort.
    • Effectively and efficiently coordinates daily patient care activities on the nursing unit.
    • Assists nursing staff to better facilitate patient admissions, discharges, and transfers.
    • Performs a variety of duties within and in support of the assigned unit as delegated by nursing staff.
    • Responds to patient’s call lights/requests and reports to appropriate personnel when necessary.
    • Assists patients in meeting nutritional needs, including providing fluids and supplements during feeding.
  • Inventory Control:
    • Orders, stocks, and replenishes unit supplies and necessary equipment in a cost‑efficient manner.
    • Participates in identifying unit financial responsibility during budget preparation.
    • Assists with keeping the unit within its budget restraints.
  • Communication:
    • Facilitates unit communication, including telephones, intercom system, call light system, computers, and relays information as appropriate.
    • Communicates patient information, concerns, or issues to appropriate interdisciplinary team members.
    • Facilitates and directs communication among visitors, employees, and physicians within the assigned unit.
  • Customer Service:
    • Welcomes visitors to the unit by greeting them, answering questions, giving directions, and referring inquiries as appropriate to nursing staff.
    • Answers telephone calls and directs them to the appropriate department or staff member.
    • Maintains a polite and friendly demeanor in all interactions, whether by phone or in person.
    • Ensures a safe and clean environment for patients and the healthcare team.
  • Documentation:
    • Documents care provided using worksheets and/or the electronic medical record.
  • Regulation:
    • Adheres to professional standards, behavioral standards, and hospital policies as set forth by the organization.
    • Complies with applicable Local, State, and Federal policies, procedures, guidelines, regulations, and laws.
    • Maintains confidentiality by protecting personal healthcare information of all patients.
Qualifications
  • Education: High School Diploma or GED Equivalent or equivalent. Required.
  • Licenses and

    Certifications:

    Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    • Meet and maintain education requirements upon hire and annually as determined by the unit and Continuing Education Department.
    • Basic knowledge of computers preferred.
    • Read and write proficiently.
    • Utilize and care for equipment on the nursing unit.
    • Recognize changes and abnormalities in the patient’s condition and report to appropriate staff.
    • Prioritize patient care, carry out assigned duties, and report and document using worksheets and the electronic medical record.
    • Assume additional duties as delegated or needed.
    • Frequent interactions with patients, family members, nurses, physicians, visitors, and other staff members.
    • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
    • Positive, caring attitude toward patients, staff, and the public.
    • Excellent customer service skills, both in person and by phone.
