Position Overview
Valmont seeks a Full‑Time General Shop Help at its Coatings Division in WestPoint, Nebraska. Shifts available include Graveyard (9:30pm–6:00am), Day (5:00am–1:30pm), and Night (1:15pm–9:45pm).
Responsibilities- Inspect and ensure the safe use and disposition of production fixtures, chains, and hooks.
- Hand‑wire small to medium‑sized parts to racks for pickling or galvanizing.
- Pull and place chains and ropes around steel bundles for racking.
- Move lightweight steel pieces by hand from different locations in the plant and yard.
- Perform paddling functions to enhance quality of galvanized products using air guns to blow off zinc needles.
- Use air or electric‑powered tools to prepare or clean steel for pickling or galvanizing.
- Assist with general plant clean‑up and housekeeping.
- Work safely and protect self and others from accidents and injuries.
- Ability to read and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to accurately read a tape measure.
- Ability to communicate problems or needs to supervisory staff.
- Ability to lift up to 50lb from ground to shoulder height or higher.
- Physically able to stand for long periods during the shift in an open‑air environment; able to wear PPE and maintain a safe work environment.
- High awareness for safety at all times.
- Passion and integrity with a drive to excel and deliver exceptional results.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- At least six months of experience in a galvanizing position.
- Six months of experience with hand tools and gauges (impact wrenches, air grinders, drills, taps, oxygen‑acetylene torches, mill gauges).
- Six months of experience operating a bridge crane.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Attention to detail and ability to follow work instructions.
- Certification of heavy equipment operation, including forklift.
The work environment includes smoke and irritating particulate impurities, acid fumes from pickling tanks, windblown dust and ash, extreme heat in summer (10–15°F above outdoor temperature), and cold working conditions in winter. Hazards include hypersensitive reactions to chemicals, heat exhaustion, burns, cuts, contusions, and eye injuries. Employees are expected to use appropriate PPE and follow safety procedures.
