Fleet Mechanic
The Town of West Point Public Works Department is looking for an experienced, self-motivated and dependable individual to serve as our Fleet Mechanic. The right individual will perform preventive maintenance, repairs, inspections, and troubleshoot mechanical parts on any and all types of machinery within the department. Work a Monday - Friday schedule with weekends off!

Starting Salary: $45133.37 ($21.70 p/hour) (Salary Range: 45133.37-69955.77) Grade: 15 OR HIGHER Dependent on Experience
Essential Functions:
- Inspects vehicles to determine the nature and extent of problem
- Develops and executes task schedules accordingly
- Removing and disassembling units such as engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, and pumps to inspect for wear and make necessary repairs
- Repairing, overhauling, or replacing parts, such as pistons, rods, valves, carburetors, bearings, distributors, shock absorbers, and exhaust systems
- Uses a vast variety of specialty tools and diagnostic equipment
- Detects and reports defective materials and dangerous conditions to the appropriate personnel
- Instructs and trains other crew members in procedures and safety requirements
- Operates vehicles and equipment such as a dump truck, backhoe, skid-steering loader, trailer
- Operates power equipment such as mowers, brush chippers, trimmers, and snow blower
- Uses tools such as hammer, axe, wrench, screwdriver, and level
- Performs prescribed preventive maintenance on vehicles, equipment, and tools as required; cleans and maintains equipment in good working condition
- Reads and interprets equipment manuals to perform required maintenance and service
- May provide input into employee performance evaluations prepared by the Director, Public Works Department
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent plus minimum of two years' experience in public works or a related field or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of basic tools and equipment
- Knowledge and use of safety precautions and equipment including reflective vest, steel-toed boots, lifting belt, eye protection, ear protection, gloves
- Basic knowledge of mechanical skills including, but not limited to, mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic troubleshooting and routine equipment repairs
- Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public Licenses or
Certifications:
Valid Virginia Commercial Driver's License required after six months
