Job Description

Under the direction of the Assistant Principal and Director of Special and Alternative Education, the Licensed Special Education Teacher for the Substantially Separate Compass Severe Autism Program develops and provides specialized instruction to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities; evaluates and assesses student progress against instructional objectives; follows Massachusetts’ mandated due process procedures and functions as IEP manager to assigned students.

The following outline of the role and responsibilities will provide a broad overview. Still, it is subject to change according to the needs of Lower Pioneer Valley Educational Collaborative, as required by the Executive Director.

  • Provides academic instruction and behavior modification approaches in a highly structured, approved therapeutic day school setting. In a small class setting, the teacher addresses the academic and emotional/behavioral needs of the students outlined in their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Plans and carries out Individualized Educational Programs (IEPs) that meet student needs and conform to state and federal laws, including preparing accurate and on-time reports, IEP goals for annual meetings, report cards, and progress reports.
  • Provides services to assigned students so that they may access the general curriculum consistent with the Massachusetts state frameworks.
  • Accepts and assumes responsibility for developing and implementing annual goals and specific objectives to meet the needs of each individual student.
  • Establishes rapport and communicates collaboratively with other teachers, support staff, administration, parents, guardians, caregivers, and others.
  • Maintains accurate and complete records on each student, including educational progress, evaluations, attendance, and communications with other professionals, parents, guardians, and caregivers.
  • Submits reports and records, as required by the Collaborative, sending district, state, or federal laws and regulations promptly to the program supervisor, administrator, and special education department.
  • Establishes a structured classroom to ensure safety and promote each student's educational progress.
  • Anticipates and plans appropriate interventions to avoid student behavior issues and uses therapeutic restraints when necessary.
  • Maintains a communication system with students' parents, guardians, and caregivers.
  • Promptly reports any changes in schedule, staff absences, and discipline incidents to the program supervisor/Assistant Principal.
  • Demonstrates a continued awareness and commitment to cultural diversity, religious and personal values, and traditions of students served and their families to accomplish the organization’s mission.
  • Adheres to LPVEC policies and procedures and the rules and regulations of the public school building to which the teacher is assigned.
  • Organizes and supervises services of classroom assistants, related service providers, and consultants in the classroom.
  • Participates in evaluating classroom assistants and individual aides (paraprofessional staff) working in the classroom.
  • Facilitates the work of consultants in the classroom and incorporates their recommendations into classroom activities.
  • Performs other essential duties as determined by the Program Supervisor/Assistant Principal, the Director of Special and Alternative Education, or the Executive Director.

    Minimum Qualifications
  • Knowledge of current education legislation/regulations, including the Team evaluation process, IDEA, and 603 CMR 28.00.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills and ability to work with all educational stakeholders.
  • Excellent time management skills, including the ability to triage/prioritize competing needs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the proven ability to effectively communicate with students and families from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • Proven ability to relate to and work with various constituencies, including administrators, teachers, other school staff members, parents/guardians, students, visitors, and community and social service agencies.
  • Knowledge and understanding of implementing the new Massachusetts IEP form.
  • Knowledge of student support services and interventions.
  • Such alternatives to the above as the LPVEC Board of Directors may find appropriate and acceptable.

    Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s (B.A./B.S.) or higher degree from a 4-year college or university.
  • Valid Massachusetts teaching license in special education, K-12 Severe Disabilities.
