Lower Pioneer Valley Educational Collaborative (LPVEC) – Teacher – Special Education (Moderate Needs)

Location:

West Springfield, Massachusetts.

The Licensed Special Education Teacher will develop and provide specialized instruction for the Substantially Separate Compass Severe Autism Program. The teacher is responsible for evaluating student progress, managing Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations, and fostering a structured therapeutic learning environment.

Responsibilities
  • Provides academic instruction and behavior modification approaches in a highly structured, approved therapeutic day school setting.
  • Plans and carries out Individualized Educational Programs (IEPs) that meet student needs and conform to state and federal laws, including accurate on‑time reporting of IEP goals, report cards, and progress reports.
  • Provides services to assigned students enabling access to the general curriculum consistent with Massachusetts state frameworks.
  • Develops and implements annual goals and specific objectives for each student.
  • Establishes rapport and collaborates with teachers, support staff, administration, parents, guardians, and caregivers.
  • Maintains accurate and complete records of educational progress, evaluation, attendance, and communications.
  • Submits required reports to the Collaborative and regulatory bodies promptly.
  • Creates a structured classroom that ensures student safety and promotes educational progress.
  • Anticipates and plans interventions to prevent behavior issues and applies therapeutic restraints when necessary.
  • Maintains communication with students' parents, guardians, and caregivers.
  • Reports changes in schedule, staff absences, or discipline incidents to the program supervisor or Assistant Principal immediately.
  • Demonstrates awareness and commitment to cultural diversity, religious, personal values, and traditions of students and families.
  • Adheres to LPVEC policies, procedures, and public school regulations of the assigned building.
  • Organizes and supervises classroom assistants, related service providers, and consultants.
  • Participates in evaluating classroom assistants and paraprofessional staff.
  • Facilitates consultant activities and incorporates their recommendations into classroom instruction.
  • Performs other essential duties as directed by the Program Supervisor, Assistant Principal, Director of Special and Alternative Education, or Executive Director.
  • Qualifications
    • Knowledge of education legislation/regulations (IDEA, 603 CMR 28.00, team evaluation process).
    • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
    • Excellent time‑management and prioritization skills.
    • Verbal and written communication skills, especially with diverse student and family backgrounds.
    • Ability to collaborate with administrators, teachers, support staff, parents, students, and community agencies.
    • Understanding and implementation of the new Massachusetts IEP form.
    • Knowledge of student support services and interventions.
    • Training in learning theory, learning styles, diagnosis and remediation of learning deficits, criterion‑referenced testing.
    • Experience with behavior modification and reinforcement theory.
    • Experience with social and emotional disability interventions.
    • Training or willingness to be trained in de‑escalation and physical restraint techniques.
    • Comprehensive understanding of state and federal special education laws.
    • Ability to provide physical assistance to students as needed.
    Education and Experience
    • Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) or higher from a 4‑year college or university.
    • Valid Massachusetts teaching license in special education, K‑12 Severe Disabilities.
    • SEI (Sheltered English Immersion) Endorsement.
    • Minimum of three years of experience in special education, preferably in substantially separate educational programs.
    • Training in IEP development and implementation.
    • Training in current educational theory and practice, including behavior modification.
    • Experience in supporting students with social and emotional disabilities.

    Position Type: Full‑time

    Salary: $51,713 to $88,879 per year
