ResponsibilitiesThe Optical Technician Intern position supports the Optical Engineering team by assisting with fiber laser build, test, component characterization, and engineering documentation activities. The goal of this position is to help address current engineering workload, support ongoing product and technology development projects, improve test-data organization and traceability, and allow engineering staff to dedicate more time to critical development milestones, technical decision-making, and complex troubleshooting tasks.
- This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
- Assisting Optical Engineering staff with building and testing new fiber laser cavities.
- Supporting the testing and evaluation of new combiners, optical fibers, and other fiber-based components.
- Performing routine optical characterization, data collection, and record keeping for development projects, including the Rosella project.
- Maintaining test records, organizing measurement data, and supporting tracking of component builds, test results, and engineering changes.
- Supporting laser assembly, laboratory setup, documentation updates, and other engineering tasks as needed to improve efficiency within the Engineering department.
- Computer literacy including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
- Hands-on experience through coursework, lab work, or projects
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Highly organized, with an ability to efficiently handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Excellent judgment, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Exceptional attention to detail.
- Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree (or higher) in a STEM or closely related field.
- Knowledge of mechanical & electrical assemblies.
- Must be capable of working in front of a computer for long periods of time.
- Must be able to stand and sit for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift to 50 lbs.
- Good close-up vision and steady hands to manipulate small components.
