Statement of Duties
The Motor Equipment Operator will work in the construction, maintenance, and operation of the Town’s Public Works systems. Performs manual work requiring specialized skill in the operation of heavy automotive equipment of considerable weight and complexity; does related work as required.
Essential FunctionsThe essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. - Operates heavy and unique construction or maintenance equipment; high capacity dump trucks or truck and trailer requiring a Commercial Drivers license
- Respond to after hours emergencies as directed and assist in emergency response activities related to system failures and/or crises
- Performs the installation and repair of all public works utilities and other appurtenances using whatever methods, tools, and procedures are necessary to complete the task safely, properly, and proficiently
- Operates heavy duty equipment for snow removal
- Read and follow specifications on engineering blueprints, sketches, and diagrams of the water and sewer system and other related operations systems.
- Locate, operate, repair, and maintain underground utilities and controls related to the public works infrastructure.
- Performs minor maintenance functions on equipment, including but not limited to checking and maintaining air pressures and fluid levels, lubrication of mechanical joints by applying necessary greases, and routine cleaning of vehicle exterior and interior.
- Performs tasks generally assigned to a laborer and/or skilled laborer
- Performs daily vehicle condition inspections and reports as required by law or Department policy.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent; and 2-4 years of experience at an accredited technical school or on-the-job training; experience in the operation of heavy automotive equipment or the equivalent combination of education and experience to perform the essential functions of this position.
Special Requirements: Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License Class B issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts with proper endorsements:
Air brakes and tanker.
Knowledge: Principles and practices about the correct, proficient, and safe operation of equipment and assigned vehicles. Applicable Municipal and Department rules and regulations about the safe operation of assigned motor equipment. Rules, regulations, and applicable laws relative to job-related safety. Principles and practices for the operation and maintenance of drinking water systems.
Abilities:
Skills: Effective motor skills necessary to operate various types of equipment and vehicles, good record keeping skills, skill in assessing mechanical, electric, and hydraulic problems and finding solutions.
