Building Maintenance, Maintenance Worker
Skilled Laborer
The Skilled Laborer performs manual work at the journeyman level in connection with Public Works Applications and maintenance projects; does related work as required.
Examples of Duties
- Installation of water systems, including pipe, valves, fire hydrants, pumps, meters and service lines
- Identify and repair service line and water main leaks
- Leak detection with correlation and hydrophone equipment
- Gate valve exercising with electric valve turner
- Exercise of system blow-off valves, air-vacuum valves and inline valves
- Perform annual fire hydrant inspections
- Water meter repair and/or replacement
- Unidirectional flushing
- Maintenance and repair of fire hydrants
- Respond to and resolve emergencies outside of normal working hours
- Read and update water distribution records
- Excavate trenches and install shoring
- Establish proper traffic control devices
- Mark underground water and sewer utilities for Dig Safe
- Handle complaints and answer questions from the public
- Maintain tools and equipment in working order
- Maintain pump station, storage facilities, and headquarters. Such duties include mowing, snow removal,
- Cleaning, painting, and any other associated tasks
Qualifications
Work requires high school graduation or equivalent plus two years' experience in Public Works construction or maintenance work or any equivalent combination of education and experience required to perform the essential functions of this position. Must have general knowledge of methods, procedures, equipment and materials relating to a variety of water system construction and maintenance tasks. Ability to lift heavy materials and to carry assigned work to completion.
Possession of a valid Massachusetts driver's license required. CDL and hoisting license preferred Possession of a Drinking Water Supply Facilities Certified Grade D1 (OIT) Operator issued by the Massachusetts Division of Professional Licensure within 1 (one) year of employment. With a Full - Drinking Water Supply Facilities Certified Grade D1 Operator issued by the Massachusetts Division of Professional Licensure in 2 (two) years.
