Job Summary
The Assistant Shop Technician is responsible for day‑to‑day shop duties, including maintaining a safe and clean work area, assisting with the repair and maintenance of rotating equipment such as pumps, gearboxes, valves, blowers, and vacuum pumps, and performing tasks both in the repair facility in West Springfield, MA, and in the field at customer sites. The role requires completing inspections, coordinating shipping of customer equipment, sandblasting, precision measurements, coating applications, and compliance with OSHA regulations.
Responsibilities- Complete initial inspection and required paperwork for all items to be repaired or serviced.
- Assist Shop Technicians with teardown and inspections of equipment.
- Assist Shop Management with receiving customers’ equipment and documenting incoming condition(s).
- Assist with sandblasting responsibilities.
- Help maintain shop housekeeping.
- Make safety recommendations and assist with monthly safety inspections.
- Help senior technicians identify, troubleshoot, and resolve issues with equipment, devices, or products using precision instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges.
- Learn and master coating applications, paint, epoxy, and other coatings.
- Assemble equipment per manufacturer specifications, verifying acceptable tolerances.
- Assist Field and Shop Technicians with tasks related to current equipment, including pump removal, pump installation, shaft alignment, vibration analysis, lube maintenance, and others.
- Maintain and complete required paperwork and timesheet.
- Assist Management with compliance with OSHA regulations.
- Clean up shop and perform other duties as assigned.
- Willingness to learn and be a team player.
- Ability to operate a forklift.
- Strong mechanical and problem‑solving skills.
- Driver’s license, DOT card a plus.
- Strong work ethic with ability to work under minimal supervision.
- Verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly communicate with engineering, technical support, sales, and management.
- Organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Knowledge of LOTO, DOT regulations, confined space procedures, basic welding, and NEMA standards a plus.
- Regularly required to talk or hear.
- Needs close vision and ability to adjust focus.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted.
- Ability to use electric and manual lifting devices.
Travel will be local. Overnight travel may be required on occasion.
