The School Bus Monitor’s primary responsibility is to provide support within the student transportation services, specifically assisting special education students during transport to and from school and/or special activities, and ensuring the safe, orderly, and professional transportation of students on an assigned bus route.

• Ride the bus or van each day on the morning, noon, and afternoon routes as assigned.
• Assist special education students and other passengers with safe loading and unloading from buses during normal and emergency situations.
• Secure students and their equipment (e.g., restraints, wheelchair tie‑downs, seat belts) to ensure safety and well‑being.
• Be knowledgeable on all rules and regulations for the transportation of school students and observe all mandatory safety regulations for school vehicles.
• Operate the wheelchair lift and secure the wheelchairs in the vehicle under the direction of the School Bus Driver.
• Display the highest ethical and professional behavior when working with students, parents, school personnel, coworkers, and community members.
• Serve as a role model for students and staff by demonstrating positive attitudes, appropriate attire and grooming, and an effective work ethic.
• Attend and participate in required training programs, staff meetings, in‑service training, workshops, etc., to gather the information needed to perform job functions.
• Instruct children to enforce rules/regulations and maintain student safety and well‑being.
• Monitor students with special needs until released to a teacher, instructional assistant, or parent to ensure safe transportation of all passengers.
• Maintain discipline in the vehicle and report inappropriate behavior to the School Bus Driver and Monitor Supervisor.
• Act as a crossing guard where students are required to cross the street.
• Prepare reports (incident reports, passenger misconduct, etc.) to document activities and comply with guidelines.
• Report observations and incidents (discipline, accidents, inappropriate social behavior, etc.) and communicate them to the School Bus Driver and Monitor Supervisor.
• Notify the School Bus Driver and Monitor Supervisor of any equipment problems.
• Enforce regulations against smoking or other contraband in the vehicle.
• Abide by LPVEC guidelines for Student Transportation and LPVEC personnel policies.
• Maintain confidentiality of records and information obtained while exercising professional duties about children, families, and other employees.
• Participate in evacuation drills with students.

• Reliability and dependability are essential.
• Physical demands: sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, and be awake and alert for up to 3 hours at a time. Must assist in evacuation of students. Able to use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms. May need to stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or climb stairs. Must lift or move up to 25 pounds and often up to 50 pounds.
  
  Specific vision requirements include ability to see at close range. Must maintain emotional control.
