Starting Pay (Firefighter): $56,000 - $65,512 annually DOE
Starting Pay (Paramedic): $70,000 - $79,512 annually DOE
Career advancement opportunities and competitive salary growth are available within the department for both Firefighters and Paramedics. Eligible employees may advance to Senior Firefighter after the required years of service with West Valley City and successful completion of the promotional testing process. Full time. 48/96 shift schedule.

Hiring Process
West Valley City Fire Department is currently accepting applications for the position of Lateral Firefighter. Each candidate will be required to submit to two tests for placement on the hiring roster. The placement tests consist of:
* Physical Agility Test (PAT)
* Oral Interviews
The minimum qualifications to participate in the placement tests include:
* Must be at least 18 years old by the Final date to receive applications.
* Possession of a valid state-issued driver's license.
* Graduation from high school or possession of a G.E.D. certificate.
* Must have a minimum of one-year full-time Firefighter experience prior to hire date (August 2026).
* Possession of Fire I & II certifications (Proof of Fire certifications ATTACHMENT REQUIRED).
* Possession of EMT Basic, EMT Advanced, or Paramedic certification. Must have NREMT certification prior to August 10th, 2026. (Proof of certification ATTACHMENT REQUIRED).
Physical Ability Test (PAT)
The "Physical Ability Test" (PAT) is used by West Valley City Fire Department as an initial evaluation of an individual's physical ability to perform the essential job functions. The PAT for West Valley City Fire Department is conducted by West Valley City Fire Department Peer Fitness Training members under the supervision of the Human Resource Office. To be considered for full-time employment, you must complete the PAT on the date(s) scheduled by West Valley City Fire Department.
Physical Ability Test (PAT) instructions and schedules will be emailed to eligible candidates by 5:00pm on April 9th, 2026.
The West Valley City Fire Department PAT will be held April 21st - 23rd, 2026. Testing will take approximately one and a half hours. Candidates must bring a valid picture the PAT. All candidates that pass the PAT will move forward in the hiring process.
Oral Interviews
The Oral Interview process is used by West Valley City Fire Department during the evaluation process to determine an individual's cognitive, social, and stress management skills. The Oral Interview process will be conducted by members of the West Valley City Fire Department under the supervision of the Human Resource Office.
