Pouch Machine Operator
- Night Shift
Calyx Containers | Salt Lake City, UT | Full-Time, On-Site, Hourly | Night Shift | Reports to the Production Manager
Pay: $25.50 - $29.00 per hour, including night shift differential, based on experience.
At Calyx, this role is Production Operator II
- Pouching.
Calyx Containers is a 10-year-old packaging company serving the cannabis industry from Salt Lake City. We design, manufacture, and source compliant packaging - rigid containers, flexible packaging, and labels - through our own domestic manufacturing facility and an international sourcing network. This year we launched packOS, our digital quoting and ordering platform, and we are rebuilding how our production floor runs: clearer standards, real certification, and a pay path that rewards operators for what they can run.
The RoleYou run our pouch-making machine on nights. That means turning printed, laminated film into finished pouches - setting up the machine, running changeovers on your own, holding quality across the full run, and handing off product that is ready to ship.
Nights run with a smaller crew, so this is a role for someone who can own the machine without anyone standing over them. When something drifts, you catch it. When something faults, you can diagnose it and get the run back on spec. That trust is why this role is certified Operator II from day one, and why it is paid the way it is.
WhatYou Own
- Setup and changeover, unassisted. Load film, set seal temperatures, dwell, and pressure, set up zippers, punches, and cut, and get to first good pouch fast.
- Running the job. Hold registration, seal quality, and dimensions across the full run, and keep production moving to the schedule.
- Quality checks. Verify seal integrity, dimensions, zipper function, and print-to-cut registration throughout the run. Catch the defect early, not at the end of the job.
- Troubleshooting. Diagnose and correct common problems - weak or wrinkled seals, registration drift, zipper misalignment, film tracking - before they become scrap or a call for help.
- Documentation. Record run data, counts, downtime, and quality checks completely, so day shift picks up exactly where you left off.
- Material and waste discipline. Track film usage, minimize setup waste and scrap, and report yield honestly.
- Machine care. Daily cleaning and operator-level preventive maintenance. Escalate real problems early instead of running through them.
- Safety. Follow lockout/tagout, guarding, and PPE requirements without shortcuts, every shift.
- Day 30: You are signed off to run our pouch machine solo, including a full changeover, on our films and our jobs.
- Day 60: Your setups are repeatable, your scrap is trending down, and your shift handoffs are clean and complete.
- Day 90: You own the machine on nights, you have suggested at least one setup improvement that sticks, and you have started cross-training on a second machine toward Operator III.
- Self-sufficient. You solve the problems you can and elevate the ones you cannot, early.
- Mechanically confident. You understand the machine, not just its controls.
- A measurer. You verify against the spec instead of eyeballing it.
- Honest about problems. You stop the run and say something rather than hoping it works out.
- Built for nights. You are reliable on this schedule and you like the focus it brings.
- Ambitious about what you can run. You want to be certified on more equipment, not less.
- 1+ year operating a pouch-making machine, bag machine, or similar flexible packaging converting equipment.
- Experience on Sun Centre pouching machine or similar.
- Ability to perform a full machine changeover without supervision.
- Ability to work night shift and/or weekends.
- Comfort reading a job ticket and spec sheet, and working with a tape measure or calipers.
- Accurate record-keeping of run and quality data.
- Physically able to stand through a full shift and lift up to 50 lbs, with roll handling assisted by equipment.
- Reliable attendance.
- Experience with stand-up pouches, zipper application, or child-resistant packaging.
- Experience with flexible packaging, film, or roll-to-roll converting.
- Forklift or pallet jack certification.
- Bilingual English/Spanish.
Calyx production titles are built around what you can run. Operator II means you are certified solo on your primary machine. Earn certification on a second machine and demonstrate independent troubleshooting on both, and you move to Operator III - with the…
