Location: Shepherdstown

The Public Services Desk Attendant supports the daily operations of the library’s public services area. This position staffs the service desk, provides basic assistance to patrons, and maintains a welcoming, well‑organized environment.

Work Schedule
  • Fall and Spring Semesters:
    Sunday 11:45 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.;
    Monday–Thursday 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
  • Summer and Intersession:
    Hours reduced and variable.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience working with the public.
  • Ability to multitask efficiently.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Post‑secondary degree or certificate.
  • Experience working in a library.
  • Knowledge of the Library of Congress Classification system (LCC).
Responsibilities
  • Responsible for opening and closing the library.
  • Performs all desk services, including checking materials in/out, shelving books, answering the telephone, and troubleshooting problems with computers, printers, and other library equipment.
  • Assigns tasks to student workers and directs them in these tasks.
  • Assists patrons with title/author searches, locates materials on the shelves, and refers patrons to reference librarians as needed.
  • Follows up on item/patron transactions that require additional attention.
  • Assists with stack maintenance.
  • Organizes the Public Services Desk to facilitate efficient service, including replenishing supplies and forms, and notifying the Library Director when supplies must be reordered.
  • Organizes the staff lounge and employee mail/supply room.
  • Checks and processes Call Slip reports multiple times per day.
  • Rotates community puzzles as needed.
  • Assists with displays.
  • Sets up furniture arrangements for events/meetings in the library and returns furniture to its original arrangement after the event.
  • Fills in for full‑time staff as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
