Thacker Pass is the largest known lithium resource in the United States. Once complete, the mine and processing facilities will produce more lithium carbonate than any other facility in the United States, sufficient to power 1 million electric vehicles per year. The EPCM contractor, Bechtel, manages and integrates the efforts of a team of contractors building the facility and procurement of about $1 billion in goods and services.
Earth work began in 2023, and design and procurement of long‑lead equipment are underway. The project is located in the high desert and wide‑open spaces of north‑central Nevada, about 25 miles from the Oregon border, 1 hour northwest of Winnemucca, and 3 hours northeast of Reno. The facility will use excess process heat to generate electricity and recycle process water up to seven times.
The Rigging Superintendent is responsible for supervising and directing operations within the rigging discipline, including cranes & rigging craft, subordinate supervisors, and other personnel. The role ensures construction performance follows specifications, schedules, and budgets.
Major Responsibilities- Provide ES&H leadership to personnel assigned to the department, including preparation and implementation of safety procedures and leading Bechtel and subcontractor safety meetings.
- Ensure compliance of all crane and rigging operations with Bechtel procedures, OSHA standards, and all applicable regulations and project‑specific requirements.
- Conduct Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and sign FLHA cards for rigging activities.
- Manage all site cranes, including safe usage, relocation, assembly/disassembly of telescopic RT‑AT and lattice boom crawler cranes, and safe rigging of long‑boom cranes.
- Manage site COE’s and the crane operator qualification program.
- Verify that assigned personnel are qualified, trained, competent, and compliant with all applicable standards.
- Inspect site for unsafe conditions and take corrective action.
- Coordinate safety training and enforce safe work practices with the Environmental Safety and Health Supervisor.
- Champion the ZERO Accident philosophy and ensure compliance with safety codes and standards.
- Review and approve subcontractor equipment and personnel mobilization and demobilization.
- Plan manpower and equipment required to execute the job.
- Monitor craft activities to ensure compliance with specifications and schedules.
- Interface with Labor/Industrial Relations for craft recruitment and training programs.
- Coordinate with the General Foreman to hire craft labor.
- Conduct employee reviews and identify training and development opportunities for subordinate personnel.
- Review craft time records using established automated tools.
- Maintain cost, schedule, and optimization of craft labor and the 90‑day and four‑week look‑ahead schedules.
- Prepare reports and forecasts, including summaries of construction progress, craft personnel forecasts, and expenditure forecasts.
- Provide input to quantity tracking applications and report weekly installed quantities to Project Controls.
- Implement corporate project policies, procedures, and instructions within assigned areas.
- Coordinate and implement established area operational plans.
- Prepare material requisitions for tools and consumables and coordinate procurement.
- Assist in performing construction testing as required.
- Perform other duties as required by Bechtel management.
- Bachelor’s degree (or international equivalent) and 10‑13 years of relevant experience, or 14‑17 years of relevant work experience.
- Heavy industrial direct hire construction experience commensurate with the type of work.
- Preferred experience in oil, gas, refinery, petrochemical, minerals processing, or power generating station construction.
- Computer literacy in word processing, spreadsheets, and database applications.
- Working knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards.
