The role of the ETI will be to support the organization of new cancer treatment services in Tanzania with a focus on training, quality, and safety in gynecological cancers and/or oncological surgery.
The Aga Khan Hospital Health Services in Dar es Salaam is targeting an OECI (Organization of European Cancer Institutes) accreditation for its Cancer Center for which the ETI will assist. It is the European quality benchmark in oncology.
The ETI will also have a liaison role with the Tanzanian Ministry of Health, to follow public policies proposed and implemented in this area, as well as to participate in the continuation of information and awareness work with stakeholders.
Main tasks and expected results:
Monitoring the teams in place in the new centers. Training and upgrading doctors. Implementing procedures in line with OECI requirements.
The expected results are the proper functioning of the services and the OECI accreditation of the Aga Khan Hospital at the end of the two years of the ETI's stay.
Description of the project or context:
The TCCP project, with the support of the French Development Agency (AFD), has transformed cancer practices and services in Tanzania. One of the key points of the project is the development of radiotherapy by doubling the number of machines available (from 7 to 14) and building a new center in Dar Es Salaam thanks to the support of France through an AFD grant.
Training of personnel, awareness and detection among populations have also been developed as well as work to strengthen governance with the different public and private bodies working in cancer prevention in Tanzania. The TCCP project has also enabled the development of cancer research, the sharing of best practices, and the elaboration of a national plan to fight this disease.
A medical oncologist and radiation therapist from the Institut Curie followed this project for 4 years as part of a partnership contract with the TCCP (until December 2023). It is within this established framework that the ETI's action will take place.
