Employment Term: Minimum 200 days annually, pursuant to WV Code §18A‑4‑8
Salary: Pursuant to WV Code §18A‑4‑8a;
Pay Grade B, C, D, or E; commensurate with experience and education level
Evaluation: Annual performance evaluation by the building principal/immediate supervisor with reference to WV §18A‑2‑12, WV State Board Policy 5314, and JCBOE’s Evaluation Policy for Service Personnel
Job SummaryThe aide assists teachers in implementing instructional programs, working with students in small groups or one‑to‑one settings, establishing rapport, and motivating students for a solid educational foundation. The aide assigned to a school bus supervises student passengers and ensures safety restraints are secured.
The aide must be classified as Aide II or higher to work in a special education program, per WV Code §18A‑4‑8.
Performance Responsibilities- Work with students who have emotional, physical, and/or mental impairments.
- Present information and respond to questions from administrators, students, staff, and the general public.
- Apply arithmetic, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
- Interface effectively with other departments, school personnel, maintenance staff, and external business contacts.
- Support academic and behavior management for individuals and groups of students.
- Demonstrate patience when working with children.
- Learn new skills and adapt to a variety of tasks.
- Follow written and oral directions and complete assigned tasks.
- Maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents, and staff.
- Work independently, self‑motivated, and without direct supervision.
- Analyze and solve practical problems in unstandardized situations.
- Interpret written, oral, diagrammatic, or scheduled instructions.
- Perform duties in compliance with county requirements, Board Policies, and Standard Operating Procedures.
- Promote harmonious working relationships with staff and external representatives.
- Use oral and written communication skills.
- Employ interpersonal relationship skills.
- Maintain appropriate dress and safety standards.
High School Diploma or equivalent, pursuant to WV Code §18A‑2‑5;
Criminal background check pursuant to WV Code §18‑5‑15c;
Meet definition of “Qualifications” in WV Code 18A‑4‑8b;
Demonstrate competency via state‑approved test(s) per WV Code §18A‑4‑8e.
- Supervise students.
- Demonstrate understanding of students’ disabilities.
- Assist teacher with planning, preparation, and distribution of classroom materials.
- Conduct learning games according to established procedures.
- Maintain regular attendance and comply with State Law and County policies.
- Maintain a safe learning environment.
- Anticipate and address unforeseen crises with large groups.
- Assist with supervision and instruction of children; create materials and bulletin boards.
- Provide individualized and small‑group instruction to reinforce teacher‑taught skills.
- Assist with data collection toward goals.
- Assist students in the restroom and perform related hygiene procedures.
- Implement lessons based on district and school objectives and student abilities.
- Assist with supervision of student passengers on buses.
- Attend in‑services and workshops as directed.
- Maintain confidentiality and integrity.
- Assist the teacher in supervising children across instructional areas, cafeteria, and bus.
- Participate in bus duty, hall monitoring, lunchroom duty, playground duty, and other duties as assigned by the building supervisor or principal.
