Job SummaryThe Aide assists teachers in implementing instructional programs, works with students individually or in small groups, and supports classroom and transportation duties. Responsibilities also include safeguarding students in transit and ensuring a safe, conducive learning environment.
Performance Responsibilities- Work with students of diverse needs, including emotional, physical, and mental impairments.
- Present information and respond to questions from administrators, staff, and students.
- Perform basic math operations as required.
- Apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
- Interface effectively with other departments, maintenance staff, and external contacts.
- Support academic and behavior management of individuals and groups of students.
- Demonstrate patience and flexibility while performing a variety of tasks.
- Follow written and oral directions and complete assignments independently.
- Maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents, and staff.
- Act self‑motivated and work without direct supervision.
- Solve practical problems and interpret various types of instructions.
- Perform duties in compliance with county requirements, Board policies, and SOPs.
- Promote harmonious working relationships with staff and external representatives.
- Communicate orally and in writing effectively.
- Maintain appropriate dress and safety standards.
- High School Diploma or equivalent (preferred).
- Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18‑5‑15c.
- Demonstrated competency on state‑approved competency tests.
- Three supervisory references required.
- Citizenship, residency, or work visa required.
- Supervise students on a bus and maintain a safe traveling environment.
- Assist teacher with planning, preparation, and distribution of classroom materials.
- Conduct learning games and provide individualized and small‑group instruction.
- Maintain regular attendance and compliance with state and county policies.
- Ensure a safe, conducive learning environment and address unforeseen crises.
- Assist with data collection toward goals.
- Support students with hygiene needs, including restroom use and diaper changes.
- Implement lessons based on district and school objectives.
- Attend in‑services and workshops as directed.
- Maintain confidentiality and integrity.
- Assist in supervising students in various school locations.
- Participate in bus duty, hall monitoring, lunchroom duty, playground duty, and other duties assigned by the building supervisor or principal.
The role requires frequent reaching, standing, walking, lifting (at least 10 pounds), writing, talking, hearing, and seeing. Use of computers and multimedia equipment is common. Employees must maintain emotional control under stress and exhibit professional attire and communication skills.
Work EnvironmentIndoor classroom and bus settings; occasional outdoor activities during recess or field trips. Noise levels are typically low to moderate (20‑60 dB), with higher levels in gymnasiums or technical labs (60‑90 dB). Continuous interaction with colleagues, the public, vendors, school staff, and students is expected.
Additional Job InformationA successful work history and a minimum of three supervisory references are required. Retired staff cannot be re‑employed in the state system until 60 days after retirement. Applicants dismissed for cause or with unfavorable references are ineligible. Failure to complete the application or provide required documentation may result in disqualification.
