You believe that school is preparation for life, more than simply the next level of school. You are passionate about Elementary School. It has its own unique character and personality and that’s what draws you to Elementary School teaching. You enjoy contributing to our students’ academic, social and emotional development. An advocate, a guide and a strong supporter of your students — that’s you.

A bilingual (Dutch/English) teaching assistant who will support our young learners in the Dutch language while embracing the ASH curricular experience. Just as in life outside the classroom, you believe that students with different backgrounds, gender identities, and learning abilities benefit from working together. Supporting your students energizes you. You love coming to school to work with them. You are solution oriented and like to contribute to a positive, enjoyable working environment.

You are independent and confident in the classroom. You understand team dynamics and work well with teams of other educators and administrators. You are an excellent communicator and see parents as your partners in their child's education. When making decisions, you focus on how we can best serve our students and parents, always looking for a way in which we can make ASH just that extra bit better for them.

You recognize that learning is not confined to a classroom or a timetable. Having an open mind and being able to give and receive constructive feedback is something you pride yourself on. As a lifelong learner you are energized by new ideas, professional development and sharing your learning with your colleagues.

You are a certificated, Elementary School Teaching Assistant. You have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent university degree preferred. You have some experience working with young children, preferably teaching in an American, Canadian or international school. You have both a theoretical understanding and classroom experience in applying developmentally appropriate, inclusive and differentiated practices.

The Role

The role is supervised by the Elementary School Principal who works with our Elementary School students. You’ll work under the supervision of the classroom teacher and you report to the Elementary School Principal. Your primary responsibility is to support strong language acquisition in both Dutch and English, through both academic and social skills instruction. You will also support teachers in the performance of routine tasks related to the instructional assignment.

The

Work

As an Elementary School Teaching Assistant, your daily activities involve aiding the classroom teacher in the implementation of the educational program. This may include work with students individually, in small groups or as an entire class. You strongly support the intense language acquisition experience for our students in both Dutch and English. You monitor student progress and help assess students under the guidance of the teacher.

You support the teacher’s classroom management plan and philosophy. You direct parent inquiries regarding students’ behaviors and instruction to the classroom teacher. You attend special area classes with the students and provide support at the request of the special area teacher. You also supervise students at recess, lunch, during transitions, etc.

You support the classroom teacher to prepare lessons and make sure the classroom is ready for student learning, e.g., grading assignments, photocopying, laminating, filing, preparing and organizing instructional materials, assisting with the set up and clean‑up of the classroom and supplies, assisting with toileting and hygiene, etc.
