A coach must be certified as a teacher (or substitute) in the State of WV or complete the National Federal Interscholastic Coaches Education Program as endorsed by the WVSSAC and the State Board of Education, and receive a coaching authorization issued by the WV Department of Education. Must also have or be willing to get current CPR/AED certification. Must have high school diploma or equivalent.

Applicants must be fully credentialed professionals or substitutes or hold a valid WVDE coaching certification before participating in any coaching duties. Call  for information on how to start the process or renew your existing certification.

Coaching duties must not interfere with other contracted duties held by the successful applicant, and the applicant must be available for practice and game times and dates as determined by the principal. Recommendations for employment will only be submitted to the Superintendent and Board of Education upon proof of required/valid certification and proof of CPR/AED training.

A High School Coach is responsible for leading and managing student athletes in a high school setting. Responsibilities include creating and implementing effective training and conditioning programs, developing strategies and game plans, and acting as a mentor to students both on and off the field.

• Abide by all athletic rules and regulations as set forth through state, county, and WVSSAC guidelines, laws, and policies.
• Work under the direction and guidance of the head coach and athletic director.
• Organize and carry out an athletic program that promotes team and school pride.
• Accept responsibility for the welfare of the students under supervision.
• Attempt to integrate the athletic program with the total school program.
• Promote positive public relations regarding the school's athletic program.
• Abide by league, county, state, and federal rules and regulations.
• Accept responsibility for the behavior and welfare of the team before and after practice or contest.
• Work in conjunction and coordination with athletic programs at other school levels.
• Accept responsibility for the retention and care of equipment.
• Provide leadership and support in the area of responsibility.
• Maintain professional work habits.
• Maintain and upgrade professional skills.
• Perform all other duties as assigned by the principal or athletic director/head coach.

The physical demands include frequently reaching, standing, walking, lifting, writing, talking, hearing, seeing, using technology such as computers and multimedia equipment, and repetitive motions. The position may require lifting or moving at least 10 pounds of materials.

The work environment is primarily indoor with occasional outdoor settings. Noise level is low to moderate (20-60 dB). Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.
