Location: Kearneysville

Job Summary

The Supervisory Special Education Aide assists teachers in implementing instructional programs, working directly with students or in small groups, establishing rapport, and motivating students to develop essential academic and behavioral skills. The aide may also be assigned to a school bus to supervise students, ensuring passenger safety and proper use of restraints.

Current posting: a full‑time substitute aide for Transportation for the 2026‑27 school year. Hours are 5:30 am‑9:00 am and 1:30 pm‑5:00 pm, with breaks between bus runs. Hours are subject to change.

Notable note: if a current JCS employee is selected as a finalist, transfer eligibility is not until the 2027‑2028 school year.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise students and maintain a safe, conducive learning environment.
  • Assist teachers with planning, preparing, and distributing classroom materials.
  • Conduct learning games and provide individualized or small‑group instruction to reinforce skills.
  • Assist with data collection toward student goals.
  • Support students with toileting and other daily living needs, including diaper changes when necessary.
  • Implement special education or transportation duties such as medication administration, lifting up to 100 lbs, and using adaptive equipment.
  • Participate in bus duty, hallway monitoring, lunchroom duty, playground duty, and other duties assigned by the building supervisor or principal.
  • Attend in‑service training and workshops as directed.
  • Maintain confidentiality, integrity, and professional conduct at all times.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Criminal background check and compliance with West Virginia Code §18‑5‑15c.
  • Demonstrated competency on state‑approved competency test(s).
  • Relevant experience detailed in Aide I through Aide IV classification, including required training, education, and experience levels (see detailed classification description).
Aide Classification Levels

Aide I:
Personnel selected and trained for teacher‑aide classifications such as monitor aide, clerical aide, classroom aide, or general aide.

Aide II:
Meets Aide I classification and has completed a state‑board approved training program, holds a high school diploma, or has a general education development certificate.

Aide III:
Holds a high school diploma or G‑ED certificate, completed six semester hours of college credit, or has one year experience as a special‑education aide.

Aide IV:
Holds a high school diploma or G‑ED certificate, completed eighteen hours of state‑board approved college credit or fifteen hours of higher education plus an in‑service training program.

Physical and Mental Requirements

Must be able to reach, stand, walk, lift, grasp, write, talk, hear, and see. May need to lift and move at least 10 pounds of materials. Requires close vision for reading and adjusting focus. Must maintain emotional control under stress and interact professionally with students, staff, and the public.

Work Environment

Primarily indoor educational setting with occasional outdoor settings for recess and field trips. Noise level generally low to moderate (20‑60 dB); higher in gymnasiums or technical labs (60‑90 dB). Continuous interaction with colleagues, vendors, school staff, and students.

Additional Information

Applicants must provide supervisory references and complete all required application materials. A successful work history and a minimum of three supervisory references are required. Individuals dismissed or non‑renewed for cause, or with unfavorable references, are not eligible. The role complies with ADA requirements and is not an exhaustive list of duties. Additional duties may be assigned by the superintendent or designee.
