Position Summary

The ECCAT (Early Childhood Classroom Assistant Teacher) assists the teacher(s) in implementing instructional programs by working directly with children in small groups or one‑to‑one. The role involves supporting students in pre‑K through third‑grade classrooms, motivating them to develop attitudes and knowledge and providing help in academic areas related to numeracy and literacy. If an applicant lacks an ECCAT certification, they must enroll in the required courses upon hiring and complete WVDE training on the science of reading and numeracy.

Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate tact and self‑control in addressing issues within the department.
  • Assist the teacher with planning, preparing, and distributing classroom materials.
  • Conduct learning games with students according to established procedures.
  • Maintain regular attendance and compliance with State Law and County policies.
  • Create a safe, conducive learning environment.
  • Anticipate and address unforeseen crises involving large groups of children.
  • Support supervision and instruction (copying, cutting, coloring) to construct materials and bulletin boards.
  • Provide individualized and small‑group instruction to reinforce teacher‑taught skills.
  • Assist in implementing lessons based on district and school objectives.
  • Supervise student passengers on buses and maintain a safe traveling environment.
  • Attend in‑services and workshops as directed.
  • Maintain confidentiality and unquestionable integrity.
  • Supervise children in classroom, cafeteria, bus, and other school locations.
  • Participate in bus duty, hall monitoring, lunchroom duty, playground duty, and other duties assigned by the building supervisor or principal.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Non‑exempt, 200 days annually pursuant to WV Code §18A‑4‑8.
  • Must pass required state competency tests.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administrators, students, staff, and the public.
  • Proficiency in arithmetic: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Patience and flexibility when working with children.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of county requirements, Board Policies, and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Appropriate dress and safety compliance.
  • Physical ability to stoop, reach, lift, and move materials.
  • Must be able to lift and/or move at least 50 lb; up to 100 lb for special education and transportation positions.
  • Vision ability to read handwritten or typed material and adjust focus.
  • Willingness to enroll and complete ECCAT courses if not certified.
  • Willingness to complete WVDE training on science of reading and numeracy.
Physical & Mental Demands

Requires frequent stooping, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, pulling, pushing, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions. Must lift/move up to 50 lb frequently, up to 100 lb for special education and transportation positions. Must maintain emotional control under stress and interact professionally with students, staff, and community.

Work Environment

Moderate to loud noise level (60–90 dB) depending on assignment. Safe, open environment with varying student interactions.

Additional Job Information

Individuals who have retired from a West Virginia school system are not eligible for re‑employment for 60 days after retirement. A successful work history and a minimum of three supervisory references are required. Applicants dismissed or not renewed for cause, or with unfavorable reference recommendations, are ineligible.
