Qualifications:
Professional Student Support Certificate endorsed in School Counselor PK-AD or PK-12. Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c and/or §18A-3-10 as appropriate Perform duties as described in the job description below.
The School Counselor serves as a certified professional educator who implements a comprehensive school counseling program designed to promote academic achievement, career readiness, and social/emotional development for all students. The counselor provides direct and indirect services to students, collaborates with families and school personnel, promotes a positive school climate, and utilizes data-driven practices to remove barriers to student success. School counselors shall spend at least eighty percent (80%) of their work time in direct counseling relationships with students.
The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed drugs while in the workplace. Alcohol and controlled substance which affects employee productivity, safety or judgment in the workplace will not be tolerated. Staff members serve as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings. Staff members have a legal responsibility to help instill in students the belief in and practice of ethical principles and democratic values.
Responsibilities
- Student Counseling and Support
- Provide individual and group counseling services to address students' academic, career, social, emotional, and developmental needs.
- Assist students in developing educational, career, and postsecondary plans.
- Identify and support students who are at risk of academic failure, truancy, chronic absenteeism, behavioral concerns, or dropping out of school.
- Provide crisis intervention and responsive services for students experiencing emotional, behavioral, or personal difficulties.
- Assist students in developing conflict resolution, decision-making, goal-setting, and self-advocacy skills.
- Academic Development Support
- Support student achievement through academic planning and progress monitoring.
- Collaborate with teachers and administrators to identify and remove barriers to student success.
- Analyze student data to identify trends and develop interventions that improve student outcomes.
- Assist with student transitions between grade levels, schools, and postsecondary opportunities.
- Career and Postsecondary Readiness
- Coordinate career awareness, exploration, and planning activities.
- Assist students and families with college admissions, financial aid, scholarships, workforce readiness, military opportunities, and career pathways.
- Promote career and technical education opportunities and workforce development initiatives.
- Consultation and Collaboration
- Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and community agencies regarding student needs and appropriate interventions.
- Participate in Student Assistance Teams, Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), Section 504 meetings, and other student support processes.
- Facilitate referrals to community agencies and outside services as appropriate.
- Collaborate with school and district personnel to improve student attendance, behavior, social-emotional wellness, and school climate.
- School and Program Leadership
- Implement a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with West Virginia Department of Education requirements and the American School Counselor Association framework.
- Utilize data to evaluate counseling program effectiveness and recommend improvements.
- Support school wide initiatives related to bullying prevention, dropout prevention, attendance improvement, mental health awareness, and positive school climate.
- Advocate for equitable educational opportunities and student success.
