Game Changer Coach
Game Changer is a student-led program aimed at preventing substance misuse in West Virginia schools. The program's main objective is to foster supportive environments and raise awareness in schools and communities, to prevent students from starting to use opioids and other drugs. Game Changer is currently seeking full-time educators or school staff from specific schools to join as a Game Changer Coach(es).
Responsibilities:
- Bridging the gap between their school community and the Game Changer organization.
- Serving as the main point of contact between their school administration, faculty, students, and their assigned Game Changer Specialist.
- Collaborating with their Game Changer Specialists to create, execute, and maintain the program in their respective schools.
- Serving as an implementation, communication, and subject matter expert for their school community in all matters concerning Game Changer programming with support of the Game Changer Specialist.
- Being able to clearly define and understand the significance of implementing substance use prevention strategies in young people.
- Attending and actively supporting all data collection efforts made by Game Changer; including distribution of surveys, pre and post-tests, etc.
- Ongoing monthly data collection and reporting within the school to support the program – shared in Game Changer Action Planning meetings ("GAP" Meetings).
- Implementing a monthly Prevention Activity from the National Awareness Month Calendar – discuss data in Game Changer Action Planning meetings ("GAP" Meetings).
- Helping to build a prevention team within their school.
- Serving as a leader within their school's Game Changer Action Planning meetings ("GAP" Meetings"), and all subcommittees when taking on next steps and recommendations using data found within the school's prevention surveys/assessments.
- Attending and investing in all adult trainings provided to them by Game Changer, including all Game Changer Action Planning meetings ("GAP" Meetings), at least two quarterly Professional Learning Communities (PLC) with other Game Changer school.
- Being actively involved in Intensive Student Education days at the elementary level, including being present during instruction or ensuring a teacher or school representative is present.
- Completion of a recommended Stigma Awareness Training.
- Working with the Game Changer specialist to develop sustainability in the school – ex: teaching ISE lessons, etc.
- Being actively involved in building and sustaining a nonuse Peer Leadership group at the middle and high school level in their respective schools, including being present for training days for the peer leaders as well as supporting the group in alternative activities throughout the school year.
Qualifications:
- Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree
- 3 years of experience within the school community
- Demonstrated experience as a student or youth group leader in clubs, churches, or at school
- Current Driver's license
- Endorsement from school leadership (principal)
- Preferred Qualifications:
- State-specific prevention specialist licensure or other current professional license (e.g., alcohol and drug counseling, social work, psychology)
- Experience in prevention settings and knowledge of the dynamics of substance use disorders and its effect on individuals, families and communities.
- History of working on research projects and familiarity with research protocols
- Master's degree in education, public health, counseling or related field
