Term of employment:

Upon Board approval for the remainder of the  school year. Thereafter, the position shall be 200 days each academic year (July 1 through June 30). In accordance with West Virginia Code §18A-2-7b, Pocahontas County Schools will be implementing the "Stay Put Rule." The WV Legislature has determined that frequent teacher changes—especially in elementary grades—are not in the best interest of students.

As a result, the Legislature intends to minimize personnel transfers between professional positions within the 20 days leading up to the start of the instructional term. However, the county board, based on the superintendent's recommendation, may approve filling a position during this period if it is deemed to serve the best interest of the students.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Pursuant to WV Code §18A-1-1:

"Classroom teacher" means a professional educator who has a direct instructional or counseling relationship with students and who spends the majority of his or her time in that capacity.

A classroom teacher responsible for providing high-quality instruction that promotes student achievement and growth. The teacher develops and delivers standards-based instruction aligned with the West Virginia College- and Career-Readiness Standards, creates and maintains a safe and engaging learning environment, and supports students' academic, social, emotional, and behavioral development. The teacher may be assigned to teach courses consistent with the employee's certification and the instructional needs of Pocahontas County Schools.

The teacher performs duties consistent with the expectations of a professional educator as defined by West Virginia Code, West Virginia Board of Education policy, and Pocahontas County Board of Education policy.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution in education or an appropriate content area.
  • Valid West Virginia Professional Teaching Certificate with appropriate endorsement(s) for the assigned position
  • Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18A-3-10
ADDITIONAL MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Applicants with recent unsatisfactory evaluations, documented performance deficiencies, or a history of unsatisfactory job performance will not be considered eligible for consideration.
  • Applicants who demonstrate unsatisfactory interview performance are not eligible for consideration
  • Applicants who receive unfavorable reference recommendations will not be eligible for consideration.
  • Applicants who have been dismissed or who have had their contracts non-renewed for cause by another school district are not eligible for consideration.
