Position Summary
Employee in this position will manage North Bend State Park – a four‑season state park that includes a twenty‑nine room lodge; conference center; self‑operated full‑service restaurant and banquet catering operation; year‑round cabins; two campgrounds; gift shop; an outdoor pool; nature center; outdoor amphitheater; picnic shelters; a concession operation for bike and boat rentals; a recreational lake; and significant hiking, equestrian, and biking trails, including access to the North Bend Rail Trail.
Duties include, but are not limited to: daily personnel assignments, scheduling, supervision and evaluation of performance, guest relations including direct assistance and complaints resolution, identifying operational needs and making decisions for corrective actions, direct management of lodge, cabin, and campground facilities, supervision of programs and activities, supervision of audit and financial functions, reporting, supervision and direct contact with park concessionaires, supervision of procurement and acquisition, supervision of park security operations, supervision and assistance with computerized property management system, supervision and evaluation of gift and souvenir resale operations, and ensuring park operations fall within all federal, state and local laws & regulations.
Rotating work schedule is required; candidate must be available weekends, holidays, and for special assignments. Must be skilled in computer use particularly Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Kronos, WVOASIS, and Gmail. Employee may be required to obtain an appropriate wastewater treatment plant operator license, and any further licenses required for sewage treatment systems will be maintained throughout employment. Employee may be assigned to “off‑facility” responsibilities or special assignments that take them away from North Bend State Park, including technical research projects, special events, supervision of satellite areas within the region, statewide temporary managerial assignments, fire‑fighting, law‑enforcement duties, and required Special Natural Resources Police Officer (SNRPO) training and pistol qualification.
Employee may be required to pass a background investigation, polygraph, psychiatric evaluation, and physical examination. Must be licensed or eligible to operate a motor vehicle. Employee required to wear assigned superintendent uniforms. Employee will perform all related work as required or assigned. Regular attendance is a requirement of this position.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
SubstitutionAdditional experience as described below may be substituted for the required training at a rate of one (1) year of full‑time or equivalent part‑time paid experience per thirty (30) semester hours of coursework.
ExperienceFour (4) years of full‑time or equivalent part‑time paid experience working at a state park, in a natural resources related field, in the tourism or travel industry, or in the environmental industry, three (3) of which must have been in an administrative or supervisory capacity.
Special RequirementMust have a valid driver’s license. May need to successfully complete required Special Natural Resources Police Officer (SNRPO) training and pistol requirements as established by the Division of Natural Resources, Law Enforcement Section. May need to pass periodic firearms qualification, an initial physical examination, psychological evaluation, and a polygraph examination designed to determine applicant’s fitness for Special Natural Resources Police Officer enforcement duties.

Four (4) years of professional experience and/or military service will be substituted for the specific (preferred) experience listed above.
Probational period 1 year per SPB 2851 effective 06/27/2019.
Pay Differentials- Park Superintendents who serve as Defensive Tactics Training Instructors in the Special Natural Resources Police Officer Program will receive a shift differential of $100 per month effective February 1, 2014 (SPB 2647).
- Park Superintendents who are not provided an on‑park residence will receive a stipend of $1,000 per month in lieu of housing effective June 1, 2012 (SPB 2601).
